What turntable should I buy?...

Given that I don't have much vinyl these days after having
it all robbed a couple of years ago so I am not too bothered
about having any top of the range effort, nor to a want t be
a bedroom DJ, so 1 will do me.

Any recommendations?

I'm not paying £360 for one deck...it's a rip off.

basically agreed.

however, if you ONLY want to do playback: Clearaudio or Rega
or something...

that all depends on how good sound-quality and durability
you want...

start with a cheap belt drive, with a qaulity catrige and
stylus

I don't mind spending money...I don't agree with the current
price of Technics which is primarily due to image rather
than quality.

You dont need a new one. You can get used ones for cheaper.
Hella cheaper.

We have a music store like a mile from my house that has a
seperate DJ room. You can actually test the tables out right
there. They are lined up and wired in. Those people make a
percentage on sales so if it means hooking it up they will.

Perhaps there is something similar near you? Its always best
to see it and touch it in person. To get an idea of the
product. Testing it of course is ace.

I was looking at the Stanton STR8100 actually...It's about
£140 cheaper than the 1210Mk5 and it looks pretty good.

Rega

Clearaudio (I'm pretty sure these guys have the worlds
best turntable or something... the "master reference")

minutes from where I live. I might drive through tomorrow
and have a look :)

I read a story about a Rega Planar once. The man who had it,
played a record while packing his bags before going on
holiday. His cab came earlier than expected, so he finished
his packing and rushed to the door. When he returned he
found that he forgot to take the record off his turntable,
and that it had run throughout his trip (I think it was one
week). All he had to do was buy a new cartridge and a new
copy of the record, because he stylus had eaten through the
wax.

True or not. I would buy a Rega. They are good and pleasant
to look at

the best for regular playback!

..and yeah.. they're pretty stylish!

I read it in the HiFi Klubben magazine some years ago. It
may be true or an urban myth, and it would be cool if
Mythbusters took it upon themselves to investigate :)

well, it doesn't seem unlikely.. if the weight is set a bit
high, you can probably run through the inner groove in a
week...

next time you're going to discard a stylus, just let it run
on an old record for a week before you discard it... see
what happens!

Excellent! One of mine is starting to fail, and I think I
will change it soon. Infact I have an old one in a box
somewhere, and I can mail it to you. It's a concorde pro-s
stylus, but I'm sure it will fit you gay pinkcoloured
one(:D). I can apply for funding from the Faculty of
Turntable Science here at my university, that is if they are
accepting my draft for a thesis. It would help alot if we
could synchronize our research.

HAHAHAHAH!

I think this could be great research! Just imagine the
logs!

"Day one: it looks exactly the same. Conclusion: One day
is not enough.

Day two: I think I see something... conclusion: I don't kow

Day three: yes, yes.. there's definately something...
conclusion: Three days make a difference.

I'm thinking Ortofon hired some "creative" consultant to
help out in their research & development department. It's a
great cartridge, don't get me wrong, but I think we can
agree that the colour was a bit off, so to speak.

I'll send you the research details via telex as soon as
possible. If you want you can check my bbs at uni. It's
available through telnet.

and I've discovered something interesting! For the
experiment to work, the stylus have to actually touch
the surface of the record!!!

My god! This might prove that my theory of the stylus being
the missing link between the record itself and the music
that emits from the turntable device. Never again shall I be
ridiculed by the turntable traditionalists! Good work,
Professor.

dude. stick with stanton. theyre turntables are really good,
durable and reasonably cheap. they also look real cool too.
whatever you do, get a good quality needle. i've always
found the fat "hip-hop" scratch type needles to be the best
quality.

hang on, perhaps I am being thick, but that story about the
record being played for a week, how does it prove that the
turntable is good?
lots of tables would also operate for a week and only the
needle and vinyl would need replacing.

same.
