The UK a great place to live?

I warn you not to come here. Everything is so expensive, we
get completely screwed. I do like a lot of the things about
it, but sometimes I really think its not worth staying here
for them and have you seen what we pay for petrol?

There are going to be even fewer jobs here in the future as
all industrial work is going down the pot to places like the
far east (I should know, I live in ex-industrial Sheffield)
and without that there can be little progress, even on
research side. The welfare state is gradually being broken
down and it seems we just seem to accept things the way they
are, we don't even see any benefits of the extra tax we pay
because it is used inefficiently. It makes me sad and and
after uni I'm going to get out of here to canada or
somewhere, this place is crowded enough as it is without
more people coming.

Hmmm.... opposite for me... after college, or maybe during
college, I'm going over there, FROM Canada.

Maybe just for a visit... but maybe for good, if I like it.

You sound very unhappy, pehaps it is time to change you
life. May I suggest going to Wakefield in Yorkshire. The
girls wear next to nothing even in the dead of winter!!!

Good luck affording it :/

Wakefield is very close, the girls are the same =)

And I am unhappy, because things could be so much better.

I have to agree with B3n, I really dislike the
"overcrowded-ness" of Britain particularly the big cities.
To an outsider it may appear cosmoplitan and vibrant, but it
becomes physically tireing when you have to dodge in and out
of people just to go shopping. I absolutley hate Cardiff
city centre when there's a match on.

Oh yes, and our public transport is the worst I've ever
used. France and Spain (supposedly more "relaxed" less
efficient countries) have much better transport systems.

I moved to Canada because the population is less dence. But
the road system is awful. It is like the M25 every morning
here, practically on every main road.

But is the standard of living generally better?

There are good and bad areas of anywhere i suppose, but i
agree about the welfare state, transport etc..
I can't understand how nearly every other country can run a
decent train service, health service, and give good customer
service, and we can't.
I've got bloody toothache and they told me they could fit me
in TWO WEEKS!
And i've just got back from London where no-one will look at
each other let alone talk to each other.
It took four attempts to ask for directions without people
running the other way.. or maybe i just look like a damn
wierdo...
.. i'm rambling, sorry, i'm off to attach a heavy weight to
my tooth and throw it out of the window...

I don't want to live in the city, I want to live in some
vast countryside in England. One of those hilly places. I
have a bit of an obsession with countrysides.

Try Dungeness, it's honestly my favorite place. The bleakest
place i've seen...

I live in an ideal place, right on the very edge of the
city. A ten minute walk and I'm right in the countryside. I
love that.

days... and we are not third world as many of you could
think

it. I leave my window open at night.

England is pretty ideal! lol, though to be honest, its just
'wet' a lot, which I dislike.

I hate the sun (my complexion hates it, too... ). Sorry,
Nacmat... I wouldn't like Spain and it's 80% sunny days.
Though I hear it's a beautiful place, and DEFINITELY not
third world!

Anywhere where it rains a lot, with lots of fog and cloudy,
wet days, that's where I want to be.

even heard Autechre complaining about it!

Make up yer mind B3n! I know what you mean about the jobs...
Tetbury is 5 minutes from Malmesbury, where Dyson is based.
You've seen it on the news... 800 jobs lost, some are my
friends, just coz the Dyson Vacuum cleaners are gonna be
made in the east!

But, England is the BEST! I love it here in the Cotswolds!

Sounds like you've gotta move dude...

Yeah, it sucks but there are some redeeming features,
whether they'll be enough to make me stay, who knows.

I really agree with the point Ceri made about overcrowding.

Some people in London walk in a really erratic fashion and
it seems that they are trying to mow other people down.

And there are too many fucking Starbucks and McDonalds in
the City.

Things could be worse - you could live in Ireland, where
it's even more expensive, and the weather and native food is
even more pathetic.

3/4 Starbucks in Cardiff (Capital of my Country) City centre
(2 miles square) What the HELL?

Fact:
Cardiff has more Pubs and Fast food outlets per/ft than
anywhere else in the UK.

As We in Britain are the third biggest beer drinkers and
also one of the most densley populated it would not be
unreasonable to suggest that the above statement applies to
the world and not just the UK!

percipitation then Newfoundland I think... :)

I'm so sick of this place... ANYWHERE!!!! I'd love to go to
Europe and soke up some of the vibe over there... seems like
a really cool place...

I was born in the UK, but I've lived in the States ever
since I was one. Somehow the fact that so much good
electronic music comes from there draws me back, at least
for a visit.

At least you don't have to live in Eastern-Europe or even
poorer countries.

Hehe I used to live in Budapest, I wanted to go to Colorado,
because my sister is there. I got here (Toronto). Not bad,
but I prefer the suburban life and sunny weather of Denver.

I visited Budapest couple years back, the food was
absolutely excellent (I *love* well made goulash) and it was
so much cheaper than england. It seemed a bit run down in
places, but it added to its appeal, I'd love to get an
apartment there when I'm older. Oh yeah, and those dark
hungarian girls are really attractive =)
