im anticipating a portable minidisc player/recorder to come
tomorrow. Ive gone all my teens without ever using anything
like that, as id prefer to get home and listen to it
properly ;).

I am recording onto my pc stuff like johnny cash, the jam,
ian dury etc at the moment, nothing like boards of canada,
as I am not sure if it would sound any good on tiny in ear
headphones.

am I right thinking this?

in-ear headphones aren't very great, even though i use them
all the time at work. You can listen to anything really, but
the more dynamic the tracks, the better headphones you wish
you had.

For blocking out the sound to others around you, in-ears are
ideal.
Back when I worked at a call center, I would have my headset
earphone resting on one ear, and my ipod right-channel
headphone in the other. I could deal with customers while
blasting intelligent christian dance contemporary samba
fusion music.

ambient tunes are VERY DIFFICULT for drivers/speakers to
reproduce.

Even mediocre in-ears are better than 90% of most commercial
speaker systems. Sure make some swell ones...

Congrats on the minidisc- I just gave mine away though it
was not a hi-md which I'm sure a smart lad such as yourself
had the savvy to purchase.

i have the MX500. They are okay but I need something new
because the right one rattles when theres a lot of bass
present. Plus they dont go as low in the hz range as i would
like.

The sennheiser should be great- what the Irish dont know
about contreception they make up for in headphone design.
