Who is making new cutting edge music?

There are so many people who seem to be rehashing the same
ideas, there are almost a limitless supply of Autechre and
AFX clones, and while the people copying may be very good,
its not really taking music in a new direction. The only
person I can think of that seems ot be really pushing it is
Amon Tobin, (and to a lesser extent BoC are doing their own
thing) I suppose that quality in itself creates change, but
I feel like I would like to see new methods of working with
sound (while not falling into the hole of 'abstract' crap)
Well, what do you think.

Oh, and if you know of some artists that are doing new stuff
be sure to mention them so we can all check them out :)

Someone else who is very good is Jan Jelinek, sort of taking
Pole a step further.

Yeah add N to (x) is ok, Flanger doesnt do much for me.
Maybe just a matter of taste. Have you guys heard the
Avalanches CD? Since I left You? Thats doing something new,
thats what im talking about.

Taoist Blockade
Did you see Add N to (X) when they came to town in the
summer?

offline Taoist Blockade from Wales on 2002-02-07 16:59 [#00082295]

Yeah Amon Tobin is in my opinion making some of the absolute
best music these days from ANY genre. BoC is still my
favorite, but I think Amon has more brilliance. Archrival I
think you and I must have pretty similar taste, I noticed
you were listening to Cannibal Ox earlier. They were in
Seattle last weekend with Aesop Rock and I almost drove down
to see them but I was sick.

Good, apart from a drunk guy pushing over the keyboards!!!
They played a really hard set. I think it is a Vancouver
thing because Tricky played really hard too!

oval, microstoria (aka markus pop) is pretty out there-i
love his stuff dead crunchy and subtle-mouse on mars?
'intrumentals-fantastic. bundy k brown (directions in music)
and of course john mcintre of tortoise fame. i
also think nobuku takemura's work is lush as well-kid 606?

any takers?

Did you see Autechre? I cant believe I missed that, I almost
threw up. Then I went to see Squarepusher and Plaid and
Squarepusher was sick wtf... So I got to see Plaid play a
weak ass set. Mira Calix was DJing some wicked stuff though.

offline Taoist Blockade from Wales on 2002-02-07 17:07 [#00082306]

YEAH! Mouse on Mars kicks ass, thats what im talking about!
they have a sound all their own. I saw them live and they
were amazing. Tortoise is also great. Prefuse 73 is also
doing interesting things. Ill be checking Oval Ken, good
suggestions.

Venetian Snares is taking it to a whole new level....(now
how to classify that level, well its tough)
Otherwise Tobin has my vote....

Hey Arch, when you say "holy trinity"...I am pretty sure I
know which 3 you mean....We are on the same wave length my
man.....I 110% agree...(if I am right)
:)

league of their own.

The holiest of holies for me would have to be:

1.Boards of Canada
2.Amon Tobin
3.Godspeed You Black Emperor

Then in no particular order:

4.Silver MT. Zion
5.Cannibal Ox
6.Prefuse 73
7.Autechre
8.Jan Jelinek
9.Do Make Say Think
10.Mouse On Mars
11.Bonobo
12.Mogwai
13.Thievery Corporation
14.Mum

Thats what ive been listening to lately anyway.

Jan Jelinek is sort of minimal, kind of like Pole but way
funkier. Worth checking out, most people who like it
reeeeally like it. Ive been finding it a bit addictive.

I love Mogwai, Sigur Ros, Mum, Mouse On Mars, Cannibal Ox
etc but I havent heard about the other stuff that you
mentioned.

I better check more of Bonobos stuff, I
really liked his remix of "Four ton Mantis" have you heard
that one?

Yeah bonobo is pretty awesome, not exactly out there in any
way, but good for relaxing or reading or whatever. I would
put him in the same feeling as Thievery Corporation.

the cats that will/are taking it to another level, fresh for
'02 (you suckas!):
boc
dj shadow
autechre (ep?)
aphex twin (rephlex release?)
automator
neptunes
timbaland
del tha funkee homosapien (if he puts anything out this year
it'll blow up based on the success of his guest rap on the
gorillaz album... and this cat deserves it, i think he's the
best lyricist out there right now)
the roots
portishead
blur (if they resume where they left off from 13 instead of
pretending they never made that amazing album)
common (he has an electronica/rap hybrid album coming out in
the next few months)
fsol
lfo
mos def
outkast
zack de la rocha (mark my words this album will be a
classic)

I totally agree with Titsworth! all those artists will take
it to another level

I got every album from those artists except LFO need to get
some low freq oscillator stuff ;) and blur, dunno I really
liked the Gorillaz album though. What is the name of the
blur track with the nice video about that little milkman (I
like that tune)?

Zacks debut will be produced by a lot of talented producers
like DJ Premier, Roni Size, RZA etc.

Timba is dope (better than the neptunes imo).

FSOL new one will definitly be a hot one, love all their
releases.

Me and Tits is also on the same vibe it seems :)

Im really lookin forward to Commons electronica album!!!

BOCs new release is hot to death, it will be hard for these
artists to make a better album, maybe DJ Shadow...

"coffee & tv" which is the only radio friendly unit shifter
on 13 (not that that makes it a bad song - i love it and
played it on my show a week and a half ago). i highly
recommend 13 - it's their only album of theirs i do and
would ever own. very experimental.

zack's debut is gonna be deadly. he's on some violent synth
crazy nasty drum 'n' bass type shit. from what i understand
it he's going to be rapping about other things besides
politics too, which will be a welcome change (even tho i
agree with his politics).

i agree timb is better than the neptunes but sometimes the
tunes top him off - check out the 2 songs they wrote for
michael jackson that mike rejected: usher "i don't know" and
babyface "there she goes". amazing.

i hope i can get really into the fsol album, i heard some of
their new stuff on a radio session as well as the papua new
guinea translations and although i admire them for changing
the (electronica) game i didn't grab onto it immediately.
i'll buy the cd when it drops tho.

as for common, there's also gonna be a lot of psychedelic /
pink floyd type influences on the album. definitely looking
forward to that one.
