I like Trent, but for some unknown reason, I've never REALLY gotten into his music, as great as it is.
I think it's his voice... I HATE his voice for some reason.

yeah, this is my first real intro to NIN... I've heard a few songs here and there, but never listened to a whole album... I noticed a few people placed this album as number one on their top 10 lists and stuff, so I figured I'd pick it up...

I was healthily obssessed up through The Downward Spiral. My friend keeps praising the Fragile and I'd like to hear it, but I can't really get into that dark vibe anymore. My life has become an upward spiral, which is quite far from anything Reznor seems to be going after. I'm sure it's quite good though.

I have the Fragile in MP3 form, but I've never had time to digest it all. Not that I don't like NIN, but there's more music out there that I'm more interested in, and it's time consuming to ''get to know'' a big double album.

The Fragile is amazing but the new live album is great it is like, "a best of", there is even a pigface track on there.
NIN rule (I am now doing the rock sign with my hand)

I have been into nin for quite a while but I didn't care too much for the Fragile. I was hoping for some more growth musically. With bands like autechre, squarepusher and coil on his Nothing lable I expected more. I found the whole thing a little dull. All very good stuff I just expected more from nin.
btw: I'm a little curious as to what prompted the "Trent Reznor is a fat racist" post.

as am i. first, trent's not fat. but who cares if he were. second, he is not a racist. if you mean against blacks, his dating preference is for BLACK women, and he's remixed the neptunes (pharrell williams is black, chad hugo is asian) and has worked with dr. dre. he's also into d'angelo, aaliyah, erykah badu, a tribe called quest, etc. etc. so i hope you don't mean against blacks. against any other race i seriously doubt as i've never heard or read a single disparaging remark he's made against a race and he seems like a decent human being to me.
as for the fragile, that album is thus far trent's greatest achievement. for 2 years after it came out i could not even listen to the downward spiral because it sounded paltry in comparison to the intricate and intelligent sonic layers of the fragile. from a musical point of view it is a superior album. i can enjoy TDS again now finally except for heresy and mr. self-destruct. i used to be obsessed with nin, now i like radiohead and aphex twin more, and listen to other cd's more than nin albums, but nin still remains high on my list of respectable and intriguing artists.
new nin material (that he's recording) has been described as violent, minimalist synth techno, so we'll see how that goes.

"the perfect drug" from that soundtrack is an anomaly of sorts... that was the only nin song he put out between 1994 and 1999 and it was really drum 'n' bass influenced, unlike before or after.
i LOVE the my iron lung ep very much. 2 of my favorite radiohead songs are on it: permanent daylight (their tribute to sonic youth, done in their style - i named my show after this song) and punch drunk lovesick singalong.

he had 2 as "trent reznor" :) don't try to correct me on nin, YOU WILL LOSE!!!! whereas one of the trent tracks was non-musical, "driver down" - which i am sure you are referring to - is a full song, but not typical nin. if you want to be technical, he released a full ALBUM of music in 1996 as the quake soundtrack. but he didn't want that to be credited to nin, even though on the game it says "sound and music: trent reznor & nine inch nails". he also did a whole 40 minute EP of david bowie "i'm afraid of americans" remixes but that's not new nin either. finally, he also remixed a song w/ notorious big, busta rhymes, and a certain rapper whose name i won't mention, but even the instrumental of that shouldn't be called nin.
ahem.

On the comment that suggested that Reznor is a racist..
I heard that he called the Max Cavalera's replacement in Sepultura (whose name escapes me) a 'dumb nigger' or something to that extent. I have no idea whether or not he really made the comment.

that's how rumors start, you know. "someone told me they heard that..." if you didn't hear it personally, see him write it online, or read it in a very reputable magazine, it's not worth spreading around. knowing trent's personality and collaborations i highly doubt he said anything of the sort.

I am trying to get into NiN through my brother (who is a big fan). I like alot of it. The Fragile is my favourite, but mainly just the left disc. Awesome stuff. Most of right is too similar, and some of it is just stupid and immature like Starf@#kers.
I also like Piggy from The Downward Spiral.
The problem with that sorta music is that it's too dark and angry too listen to any time. You REALLY have to get into the mood of it.

i wouldn't call the fragile an angry album. the only angry songs on it, in my mind, are somewhat damaged and no, you don't. the other fierce ones have greater elements of cynicism, bitterness, and disappointment. his earlier stuff is more angry (especially the killer "broken" ep, wow), he was a little too old to do the angry stuff when he made the fragile.

i'd like to reflect on the fragile, i think it was disappointing, i read in OOR magazine about the way it was concieved: the first year trent just let flow out all kind music. this made somekind of atmosperic album, which he could have used for a soundtrack or something, but then he spent another year making this music into nin-songs.
And that last thing, i think, he shouldn't have done, otherwise there had been real progression, now the only songs i only totally like are (as far as i see from the sleeve now): just like you imagined, pilgrimage, la mer, the great below, ripe and the completely nin and therefor fun starfucker, inc..
btw was the confirmation of the fact that this album was less good for me the remix album which for the downward spiral was genius but for the fragile was crap, and therefor the first nin i didnt buy.
i hope i didn't bore the crap out of you with this review, i just had to get it off my chest
