As in, music that grows on you and shit. Do you end up
liking these musics more than the ones that you instantly
"clicked with"? If yes, name said musics. This is an
important.

Here are some of mine, like:

- Jamie Lidell - Muddlin' Gear
- Opeth - Deliverance
- Speedy J - A Shocking Hobby
- Matmos - The Civil War
- The Velvet Underground - White Light / White Heat
- Smog - Knock Knock
- James Plotkin and Brent Gutzeit - Mosquito Dream

Anyway, i think i tend to like the "growers" more than the
"instants" when it comes down to it. Also, i wonder if this
thread will just turn into a big list of albums.

"growers" are the ones that you'll keep listening to over
the years.

rubbish
then i ended up listening to same cd (turn on the bright
lights) in my discman for a month
i even like antics after 5-6 listens, more and more every
time..

I'd only heard his very early releases prior to "a shocking
hobby", so i wasn't quite prepared for it. Plus i bought it
when i was about 14, so that may have something to do with
it.

Also: yes, i find myself listening less to the growers than
the instants, but liking them more and more every time i do.
It's nice.

"Do you end up liking these musics more than the ones
that you instantly "clicked with"?

> depends, not necessarily.
there are records i loved right from second or third listen
(first listen never counts) and still love/listen to often
now months or years ago, and some that needed a lot more
time for me to get into that i don't listen to anymore and
never got me that *superlove* effect the first kind gave
me.

of course it's not always the case. but all in all, i'd say
that for example Morcheeba has much better "(how much i love
it)*(how often i play it)/(how long it took me to get into
it)" value than Autechre...

this said, i wouldn't just keep the "easy" kind, there are
moments where i want to listen to some difficult/abstract
stuff, also for broadening musical horizons, and all in all
it's still worth it. : )

another point: a "grower" for a certain person can be an
"instant love" for another person. (maybe i'll like
Transformer by Lou Reed someday? it would have been a hard
one!)

the lastest thing that growth into me and took its damn time
to do so was SunnO)))... ("Flight Of The Behemoth", that's
the only album i have from them so far) - i've had the album
from months and so far only played it rarely, thought it was
ok, but now i'm starting to really dig it

Ah, i've been meaning to check out SunnO))) for about a
zillion years. I'll stick "flight of the behemoth" on The
Big List Of Things, thanks.

The thing with growers is that you don't immediately spunk
in your kecks with joy, it's more of an "oh! that's very
nice" experience, a little bit more every time you listen.
Personally i enjoy that in music (and other ArtyAreas too,
actually). It feels a bit like you're properly interacting
with the sounds, rather than it twatting you between the
eyes and telling you it's great.

even better is when you didn't think much of the
ArtyArea-piece in the first place.

I love how you can like 1 or 2 tracks on a cd and slowly,
the other tracks open themselves to you.

I've had this with so many albums it's ridiculous.

lately it's been with Moodog's work, I guess. I just love it
when an album unlocks.

it does indeed give some feeling of exploration and
interactivitationicity.

i like Grower's Direct... but i dunno, i think maybe i'm a
little too old for that shit now... if we're gonna drink

vodka is a decent standby, rum if i don't have enough

Oh yes, i forgot the good old Captain.

When i first bought Troust Mask Replica, the first two or
three tracks really made me sit up and listen hard, but
there was no way i could actually bring myself to listen to
the full album at the time. Needless to say, nowadays it's
one of those albums that i bring out very occasionally to
really properly listen to whilst doing nothing else... it
seems to "deserve" it somehow.

Not to compare them, but i do this with phatholocyanine's
"25 tracks fer 1 track" too. It's like a separate little
musical world, but it took me more than 2 years to really
love.

i don't know if "Flight Of The Behemoth" is their best,
since it's the only one i know : )
but it has the highest rating on AMG and also two tracks in
collaboration with Merzbow on it.

qrter > "I love how you can like 1 or 2 tracks on a cd

so many albums it's ridiculous."

> yes, me too... often it's like, two or three tracks that
stand out and the others sounds the same at first listens.

Moondog is jazz right? what kind of?

i only like Captain Beefheart at small doses... maybe it's
still growing, dunno, my opinion on it hasn't changed so
far.

Heh, as usual i've heard fuck all from that list (although i
have been meaning to check out more doom stuff), apart from
pet sounds.

Pet sounds was one of those immediate loves for me... it
might be one of the few "instant" records i only get out
occasionally, not just to hear, but to really listen to.
It's really lovely. Same with spiderland, oddly enough.
They're honestly two of the only instant-albums i listen to
all that much. Loveless being another one.

as a caveat, i should say that it is likely that i didn't
like Pet Sounds originally, because i was too young and
stupid to appreciate fine pop music...

also Quasimoto is not Doom, but rather his madvillain
partner in crime Madlib... it is better than Madvillain...
but i should warn you: it's a grower.

Ahh, i thought i'd made a slipup somewhere in that post, too
much sodding beer. I've got madlib's blue note remix album,
but i didn't think all that much of it really. Although it
might be A Grower for the future, i dunno.

Anyway, i'll check out "the unseen", merci beaucoup.

Man first time I heard Interpol I thought it was totally
amazing shit. One of those few records that blows you away
the first time you hear it and then continues to blow you
away (like Loveless)

I think Bjork's records are generally quite difficult at
first. Also I didn't get Prefuse 73 at all when I first
heard him and now I think he's a genius.

cant believe how amazing it is, makes me want to create art,
