What does everyone think of hearing preset sounds in songs?
If the song is good... its good, right?

depends on what you think is good music.

for electronic music, I do like to hear interesting
sounddesign. most synths sounds awful to me, for example.

I think they're lush

Sample libraries and presets tend to sound really fucking
bad, at least to my ears. If you're going to make music, i
think it sounds a lot more interesting to make your own
sounds from your own sources. Or at least mess around with
other people's sounds until they sound like "yours".

Jesus, the word "preset" actually produces a physical,
bodily reaction of distaste in me. I'm such a snob.

on the other hand, if it's a guitar band, for example, I
don't mind the guitarsound.

the focus then goes more to the composition, although if you
then do something interesting to the guitarsound itself it's
a big bonus.

the thing with electronic music is that you basically have,
more or less, complete freedom - so to me it's disappointing
if you don't do something with it. not to say I don't
appreciate a good BoC-melody, but there you go.

I donno. I used to hate people who used presets. Then I
started hearing some amazing music that obviously use
presets from reaktor, and a bunch of other synths that I
use, and the songs were amazing, so I changed my mind.

Good music is good music, reguardless of when or how it was
made.

sadly, a lot of why some music is good or bad is exactly HOW
it was made..

i agree, if it's good, it's good. i think sound design is
definitely a part of that. however you can spend 20 hours
designing an awesome click sound, but that sound by itself
ain't a great song. most people will not be able to
appreciate the hard work and technical mastery that went in
to it.

it's like, if you eat all the right foods to lay the perfect
shit. i doubt even your closest friends will want to keep a
piece of it!

I think what's most important is if you put enough effort in
your song to give it your own style. Then i don't think it
matters as much what sounds are used.

Venus No.17 has sorta presetish sounds but it doesn't ruin
the track at all. Sometimes I like to hear familiar sounds.
It's like an inside joke between IDM artists, except there
is no joke involved.

seeing as most people seem to use a popsong-structure, it
would help a lot if they spent more time on sounddesign.

Everything is a tool and you shouldn't be a snob about using
it if the chemistry works in your mix. There's no formula
for creating magic that works everytime - it can happen with
a VSTi preset, a toy whistle or a $15,000 modular setup.

Some people are art hobos who want us to live in the gutter
mixing our pigments out of cheap wine and tobacco juice, and
there's a place for that too.

use them, but use them wisely...

however, people judge music for lots of qualities that have
nothing really to do with the music. sometimes the people
who are obsessed with original sounds tend to neglect other
aspects.

if you ask your music to be judged, or put it in public for
comment, be prepared to hear from the nitpicky listeners
about how this or that synth sounds awful, or ultraserious
comments about "sound design"...

i'm pretty sure aphex used a keyboard preset or two on
selected ambient works 2.

and what is a piano but a preset sound?

I don't care - If I find a Preset I like I'll use it and
maybe tweak it to be more in tune with me. Other times I'll
just tweak all the knobs myself - currently, Triangle Synth
is my favourite! I don't really use the presets on that one
at all, it is too much fun twiddling knobs!
