Simon and Garfunkel, and the Silencers are good starters for
ten.

Bad Sector / Sshe Retina Stimulants split has the first
track called 'silence'. About 11 seconds only.

beck said that silence was the only - perfect - sound. you
could include that into your essay.

if he paints nothing on a blank surface and exposes it. why
not? it's the negative-version of a painting.

if you put a blank page on an easel an expose it i bet some
people would consider it a painting.
john cage's 4'33 is considered music, too. even though it's
composed of silence.

I'd definitely check out composers:
Toru Takemitsu & Morton Feldman

I'd recommend listening to Rothko Chapel by Feldman first,
it's a favourite of mine.

Also if it's simply about space and not silence you could
include some Miles Davis. For example his solo on So What is
very withdrawn compared to Coltrane's and Adderley's who
fill up the sound a lot more, plus on bitches brew and in a
silent way he uses a lot of space.

the thing is that music is just sound right, so the point of
4'33 is that we're never truly working with a blank canvas
to begin with...

but you could make the same argument about painting too i
suppose...

old thread... in here i transcribed a pretty lengthy
quote from a Taku Sugimoto interview by the wire... you
might want to look into his works... and also Radu
Malfatti... the two of them are just about the most silent
performers i know of...

"passion of the christ", really?

I'm okay, have to do some work for school, which I don't
feel like doing, but there you go.

funny thing is, I have a mozarella pizza waiting to be
shoved into the oven.. scary..

I have a multitude of films to watch instead of doing
homework. your choice is "the passion..", I think I'll be
going for "hellraiser". :P

or maybe "the stepford wives" (the seventies version).

"Anybody listening intently would have heard them: while
nobody produces sound deliberately, there will nonetheless
be sounds in the concert hall. It is these sounds,
unpredictable and unintentional, that are to be regarded as
constituting the music in this piece. The piece remains
controversial to this day, and is seen as challenging the
very definition of music."

if you consider the accidental sounds that ermerge during a
performance of 4'33 the music it's of course not the silence
that makes the "song".

but these sounds'd be like environmental-sounds. they
weren't Composed.

the term "painting" indicates a certain way how the visual
has to be produced. a painting has to be painted.

but music, if you consider 4'33 music, wouldn't have to be
composed, but exists anyway.

considering this you couldn't compare music and painting.

you guys should hear Dach... it's basically a
recording taken from a festival that was held sort of
outdoors (under a canopy, or something to that effect)...
basically it's three improvisers, one of whom is Malfatti,
playing relatively delicate, airy stuff, and you can hear
the sound of rain hitting the performance space and also the
sound of the plastic ceiling creaking in the ensuing heat...
it's really bizarre stuff, i have to admit it took me many
many listens to fully appreciate it (and it demands very
quiet conditions), but the vibe that the whole thing gives
off is pretty fascinating... plus Thomas Lehn's old-school
synth stylings are real interesting...
