I don't deny these would be good tracks as part of a large
album. (I've heard the high quality mp3s, btw.)

But they're NOT good enough to warrant a purchase of them on
their own, especially at that price! It's mad!

i think the vinyl/binder is a pretty neat way to release it.
it's great for the collectors, and definately has an
endearing quality to it. it'd be cool to see more artists
take the time to think of somewhat original ways to release
their music other than the standard cd in a jewel case.
aphex has created a whole package that's more interesting
than just the tracks alone and some liner notes would've
provided.

that being said, i also hope they release a more accessable
version for us slobos who just want to hear the musics.

It's ok i guess, if you like that sort of thing. It
does sound a bit old, though.

so far i'd say i enjoy it... i'm still waiting for Aphex to
pick up a get movin' forward again, but for now i'm happy
with these rather accomplished electro-tracks from afx...
still aping himself, but there's a bit more room to breath
here, and i think that's a super good thing. could this shit
tear a new asshole on the dancefloor? probably, and that's
something that can be said of very few tracks he's put out
post-windowlicker...

xmd5a is incredible, holy fuck!

fenix funk is great technically, but the structure is too
messy to give it a profound impact.. still awesome though.

He's messing with rhythm in a way I haven't heard him do a
lot of before; specifically he'll imply different
subdivisions and barlines by bringing in some different shit
now and the (go through first minute of md5a!).

he did some really impressive stuff with his voice in there.

oh yeah, that moment from 3'30" onwards (for, say, a minute)
in xmd5a is the shitteloni ventolini.

I got the torrent from the other thread.

I still don't understand the appeal of xmd5a, it just sounds
unfinished, badly structured and unsatisfying to me. :(

offline rezpeni on 2005-01-14 16:29 [#01459484]

these are very excellent tracks. there is a lightness of
touch in the production like in ricky's earlier stuff. not
the heavy rigidness of mangle and smojphace. they move along
very well - the melodies are unmistakably classic afx. he
never seems to repeat the same thing twice which propels the
listener and keeps him engaged and interested in every
moment. the watery effects on the piano chords of xmd5a are
are a lovely and original touch. a very pleasing progression
from the programming on windowlicker and 2 remixes, with a
warm deep analog sound reminiscent of the polygon window.
well done timeless afx music.

9/10

the structure is fucked in both of them. I will try to
discern this more for xmd5a, which I have only heard once;
fenix funk I think may genuinely be laid down sort of
stream-of-conscience.

Both tracks have a lot to study, however; lots of
detail/richness in both. I'm getting a boner thinking about
walking to school every day with this in my headphones.

fucking master.

I wish I knew =( Might be azumanga daioh, which I've never
seen and probably misspelled. I found it randomly on some
random site not related to anime.. I never steal shit (and
most definitely made all of my crappy avatars), but this is
great.

new times though; I stole an avatar from w M w as well.

Nope, I don't like "xmd5a"...I don't mind if others enjoy
it, but I can't see what's so special about this track; I
find the melody and chords and synth sounds at the end to be
particularly offensive, along with the increadably basic and
pathetic sounding beat. Why do people like this track, apart
from the nice sounding watery piano!?

i listened to them and after few listens immidiately deleted
it (do the same, people ;)!!!

now...

the stuff is wonderful, simply because it is very
melancholic, melodic. it is whole musical "landscape".
like... uhm... well, when I have heard "smojpahce"- I had
not built a movie in my head, u know what i mean... now I am
listening to analord and it is sooo cinematic, I could take
my dv camera and try to catch pictures that would fit
analord sounds. Analord is that good :) I am happy I will
get it on vinyl :)

well I guess I mean his treatment of them (they sound pretty
rich, not the strident sort of acid line I'm used to) isn't
in the usual sense..

ok fuck I'm talking out of my ass. touche.

but the sound of it is still extremly acidy..he sure did get
the best out of it.

for me it's a concept for a regular human to perceive
immediately. Otherwise we're talking about sub-human
retards, and I don't give a shit.

but concepts don't mean much if you don't embody them...
it's one thing to think about and quite another to actually
experience... of course you could just say 'i'm experiencing
it whenever i bloody well feel like it', but it think
there's something to be said for the way mr. cage set it
up... in any case... i'm glad we're never going to talk

I think something's wrong with a person if they need such a
contrived setting to realize that. It's wannabe-esoteric
elitism. I think there's something very flamboyant about
it; it's totally different than a study of silence for me.
