but contrivance is sort of at the heart of performance,
innit? i think that's precisely why it's so effective in
that setting...
what, for you, would be a better way of exploring the
issue?
and also, was 4'33 the lone piece you saw from mr. cage at
that performance?

It was the only cage, but it was all 20th century american
music, so I heard all sorts of similar elements.

I think you've hit the heart of the problem for me--I don't
like anything contrived in performances. I generally don't
like performing and performances, though I'll like them if
the performer is absolutely incredible.. in which case I
like it when their physical expression is quite slight, and
the point is the music. The reason why in this case I will
prefer it to listening alone at home is tricky because I'd
usually rather hear it at home.. but if I've motivated
myself to go I'm just wanting a change of setting and also
the whole holy-shit-oh-ny-god bit you get from seeing a
great performance live (by great performance I don't mean a
great showman, I mean great music and great skill).

Note that the only performance I'll go to is classical
music. I'd see aphex though.

It's pretty good. I'll probably buy the regular priced vinyl
when that comes out.

it gives me the horn for excellent electronic music once
more. 9.2 out of 10 after about ten listens or so.
