 | Here's a question for you all, it might be obvious but I do not know...

When I play CDs in the car (which is where I do mostly),
some allow me to play them really loud, whereas others with
the volume on max, are not as loud as I think it could be.
Is this quite simply because they are not recorded as loud?

 | depends how high the volume on the cd itself is, I would say.

some cd's are "softer" than others.

 | a good example is to make a mix cd with music by the band eels.

if you take them as on the cd, the tracks from "souljacker"
will just about blast your ears off in reference to tracks
 from other cds.

 | If it hasn't been mastered and recorded at a high volume when pressed to cd, you won't be able to play it as loud,

 | Its probly more to do with the kind of amplifiers used for cars, and the amount of space in a car as opposed to a room.
I can guarantee you, if you were in a room the size of a
car, with a speaker in every corner, your music will sound
 much louder.

Its kinda hard in my appartment, cause the ceilings are so
high, everything kinda sounds echoy, and quiet.

 | Hah! Yes.
I only e-laugh because i was making an eels compilation for
a friend last week. Any mixtape-thing where i have to fire
up the ol' wav-spazzing program is a bad thing.

 | I'd say the easiest way to fix this would be to reburn the cd with nero and select NORMALIZE TRACKS.

Normalizing means that the entire wav forms volume will be
increased as much as it takse for the highest peak to max
 out before clipping.

 Makes things louder.

Turn up your mids on your car for the quiet stuff too.

 | this is one reason why making your own mp3s can be very nice; there's a setting called 'replay gain' which encodes a
suggested amplification for the track into the file.. point
being that you can set this as you wish, and ripping all
your songs will balance this shit out.

 | I made such an "unmastered" mix-cd to play at my work about a year ago.

everything would be fine and dandy and then the sample that
"that's not really funny" begins with would start, we'd do a
Spaced-like "ooooh shiiiiit" and get blasted away by all the
 "OOOOOOh-OOOOOOHHH!!!!"s.

 | By gum, i do that all the time, even though it really annoys me. The usual problem is when i am lying in bed very close
to sleepytime. And suddenly having some random shoutiness
rousing me from my doze into a veritable frenzy of cd-remote
 searching. Awfuls.

 | ha ha
I get that too - you're already kind of dozing off and any
sound will sound about 20 times louder anyway, so anything
loud will make you panic like a small bunny in fear of
 getting squished!
