Oh yeah, slowdive. Slowdive are good.

I wouldn't call a storm in heaven shoegaze stuff
though. Although i'm quite the nitpicker.

i like mbv a lot now...

i'm not 100% sure what this genre is. i've heard that
dinosaur jr belongs to it, but i don't really get it. i
love dinosaur and have for a long time. one of the most
underestimated rock bands ever.

The first real example of Shoegazer came from My Bloody
Valentine with their 1988 album Isn't Anything. The album is
characterized by warbling fuzzed out guitars, male / female
vocal harmonies and dreamy, cough syrup influenced pop
sensibilities.

hahaha!

thanks for that. it sounds like a great idea... i don't
know many of the bands though.

and i think that if you go by that description, dinosaur
wasn't totally far off as far as style, though they're from
the u.s.

something like "my bloody valentine" or "cocteau twins"
sounds nothing like "dinosaur jr", though.

dinosaur was a little more aggressive than some of those
other bands, and most of the bands are british. there were
other lesser known american bands that adopted the sound,
like the drop nineteens, but they are largely lost in
obscurity at this point. medicine also had a similar
sound.

dinosaur was definitely a great band. " funny" anecdote: i
saw my bloody valentine open for dinosaur in 1992 (on
valentine's day, no less), attended by mostly dinosaur fans.
mbv ended their set with a massive crescendo of deafening
noise, and i looked around at the dinosaur fans and there
were more than a few faces with the "wtf" look. when the
crescendo finally fell away (after about 12 minutes!) the
dinosaur fan next to me said to her friend "what the fuck
was *that*?!?"

yes - i am not arguing. i just meant that going by this
description:

"In the mid to late 80s, the heavily effected guitar sound
would again be described as the Wall Of Sound. Many times,
the guitars were deafeningly loud, instruments would blend
together, virtually indistinguishable from one another.
Vocals are usually very low in the mix and chords are played
with a heavy hand on the whammy bar to create a soaring
effect. Beauty through noise."

that's a pretty good description of dinosaur, right? that's
all i meant.

ps - your avatar makes me hate you. ;)
