so? when her sister does something embarassing and stupid (um like that's never gonna happen) I will laugh at her, too.

haha, indeed, that is what newlyweds is all about isn't it?
all i meant was that having pipes isn't necessarily important for a pop star... and maybe it shouldn't be either... i sincerely doubt that Ashlee would have got the boo-fest for her bad singing if what has already happened had not... but then the question is: are they booing her singing, because they prefer it when a pop-star goes up there and sings-along with a pre-recorded vocal?
kind of sounds like you're fucked if you do fucked if you don't...

I had this long post typed out and I LOST IT! Fuck!
Anyways, maybe it's not the most important thing, but talent is a HUGE contributor. The pop stars that will stick with us as being worthy of our attention are the ones that have talent, charisma, an interesting public persona...none of which Ashlee Simpson has got. She can't sing, she's boring and obnoxious, she's a tag-a-long of her older sister (who in my opinion is more likeable if only for the fact that she came along first).
The way things are going, we'll never have another really respectable top 40s star (ie Diana Ross, Madonna -- ok to a point..i'm sure you see where i'm going with this). The music has gotten to this staticky flat point where nothing sticks out and it's completely drained of any kind of feeling, really. And I don't really know where I'm going with this

"The way things are going, we'll never have another really respectable top 40s star"
i agree that statement completely...
but maybe it's all just symptomatic (like you said) of what our generation wants/fetishizes... maybe that respectable pop star is no longer attainable (or something?)
the things is that talent is not pipes... particularly now, in the music video/top40danceclub/radio age where the vast majority of our interactions with these pop stars are mediated through the recording medium.... regardless of who we're talking about here, from now on (and for a long time already), there's going to be a pretty sizable discrepancy between the music-video image and the real thing... and that's what our society has voted for... shit, that's even what us cynical assholes on this messageboard vote for when we say that we hate a celebrity because they are ugly (or something to that effect)...in certain imagistic (for lack of a more simple, actual word) regards, we really do demand of our pop stars more than is physically possible of a normal, natural human being... talent then becomes... well gee, it's tough to say at this point... malleability maybe? looking, and moving in a way that seems "now"...? having physical features that aren't so pronounced that they can't be erased by whatever image augmentation the market demands? i honestly don't fuckin' know what to tell you... i have no fuckin' clue where i'm going with this, but all the same, as i said elsewhere: it's fun, and interesting to talk about.

The sixites and seventies had really great talent in the top 40 because it wasn't about image, but I never say never. There are always suprises. Suprises are what shake true change and true long lasting stars shake the tree. They always pop up, too. Maybe less often, but it happens and it alters the industry.

It's these fucking industry pop star factories. The suits have to stop trying to make a formula out of everything. Let things evolve. But it's great, cause the top 40 in the 80's was just like this and then nirvana broke. Then the cycle begins again. Atleast underground music is more accessible now.

also the industry was less entrenched in corporate america in general... i think it's pretty safe to say that most musical visionaries will be found on independent labels from now on... commercial visionaries on the other hand... well there's plenty of them in the entertainment industry right now... and boy aren't they all something....

yeah, there's nobody that's really unique out there in pop -- it seems like every new person that comes out is a combination of so and so...

i definitely think the upsurge of the underground is only going to continue due to the newfound accessibility of just about everything under the sun musicwise...

i watched the video and I don't think it sounds that bad... ok ok, her voice breaks at the end but that's all. maybe it was just a sound failure?
cus at the begining her voice is barely listenable and sudenly it goes up in volume a lot. and it was unlistenable by the people at the stadium.
