saw Aphex Twin play live once. It was the most boring live show I've ever seen. Ugly bloke lying on a dirty couch with a laptop, funky music coming out. They had some attempt at entertainment - idiots in carebare costumes lumbering around. I guess I wasn't high enough.

This strikes me as similar to the expensive movie memorabilia figurines that socially retarded males buy at comic book and card shops. I'm sure there's money in it but it must be disheartening to have a fanbase that smells like failure.

He did. It was on the 47th Jumartember 1993.
I have mellowed to the whole analord thing now. I was pissed off thinking I was going to be missing out on something because it's more than I will ever spend on 2 tracks. Rephlex probably aren't going to be making that much profit on such a short run of the EP so the price is probably fair. He's not forcing anyone to order...and if it's as good as it could potentially be then it is going to be worth every penny.

How is it? You could listen to it once...do yourself an awesome rip and then sell it at a profit on ebay. If it is good there will be a queue of people willing to buy it.

nobody is buying this related to the quality of the music, noone has heard it yet.

it is selling purely By The Power of Hype. reselling will be to collectors/completists. with the knowledge that the cd is coming out in about 6 months, why buy the expensive vinyl?

The price was set after the pressing. Given that there are 9 more, I don't think this first one is a hoax; I think they are stating pretty clearly 'this is fucking good' (yes I've said this before).

What pisses you off so much about aphex? Can you think of any living musician with his range, his attention to detail, his instinct? Holy shit, listen to nannou, windowlicker, come to daddy, avril14, vordhosbn, rhubarb after one another. The guy is fucking tremendous.

And all the flippant shit? I think the fucker is just bored as shit, and doing what he can to make life enjoyable.

Or speculative purchasing. I have to be honest when I first thought it was a limited edition I was going to order it because I thought some money could be made...then it turned out that it wasn't limited and in that case no where near worth the risk.

right-o.
i heard they were pressing the first batch on really high quality vinyl for the collectors, and then the rest of them were gonna be pressed on those little floppy plastic film things that used to get distributed in magazines sometimes.

p.s. i just made that up.

I'm not saying it's a hoax - it could be a great record.
but that is also all it is - a fucking 12". not the second coming of Jesus, including crappy binder.

what pisses me off is not so much that it is aphex - I really don't hear what's supposed to be so great about his music, to me most of it sounds rather dull and boring. I absolutely get no orgasms over his work (and have heard most of it, btw) and think this idea that he's some kind of genius to be very overrated, but there you go.

anyway, what does annoy me is that a scheme like this Analord-thing has fuck-all to do with music or the love for music. it's building up hype and image and then selling that hype/image as if it has any value at all.

ofcourse, some form of imagery is part of the representation of music - it's inevitable. but it should (imo at least) be there to support the music. all sense of proportion is gone.

I'm surprised so many people swallow this shit and then try to quickly find arguments

now, just to clarify, this makes it sound like I'm sitting at home, my fists balled in anger, but alas. I really don't care that much - you want to pay 40 pounds for a faded reputation and a binder? be my guest. :)
part of the fun is seeing people get riled up when you say the Analord hype is just that - I am the antithesis to dobbin/tolstoyed's as predictable anti autechre league.

thanks for the thorough reply! Just so you know I didn't do the pre-order; I have a feeling (half hope?) that aphex is committing to 10 discs because he really wants to put out something impressive, something that he can be proud of himself over. He's dicked around a lot but, as an incredible personality (I'll get to that), he no doubt feels the need for something real in life, some goal, and I'm hoping this is it. At the very least I view him as capable of putting out better music than anyone, and hope he puts out that effort.

I wasn't asking you this to call a bluff or to be a pest, I was really curious. I assume that you know on the order of 10x more electronic music than me, but after around a 2 year hiatus from him I've been really in love with him for a long time. I can't find anyone with the range he has (I listed examples in the previous--windowlicker, nannou, pancake lizard, rhubarb, etc), that ridiculous attention to detail (all the little tweaking on the voices in vordhosbn), and a great instinct (I mean holy shit, some of these tracks how did he figure out certain sounds would go together so well?). I cannot factually contest the claim that, knowing all the music you do, it would still be good, but I find it doubtful that I have somehow overlooked a treasure trove of quality.

  Anyway thanks for replying.
I agree with most people that he just gets a tremendous kick out of manipulating people, but I can understand a certain disgust with such ostentation..

the rumours are it's going to be acidy (could be that this only goes for analord10), so if this is true i doubt this could be 'the impressive thing' you talk about...could be that the whole analord series is going to be a mixture of different styles though, i'd really like that!

Hmmm ok, thanks. I'm using mass inference and like I said some hope to determine that he's trying to put together something he can be proud of.. the CD version will probably just be some gay 'selections from' shit. daaaaaaaamn I don't have a record player.

yeah, rdj is definately an artist who uses manipulating his fanbase as a canvas.

i really like a lot of his musics too though.

The outrageous pricetag for this release is the biggest advocacy for music piracy ever, maybe that's what he's trying to establish since he doesn't give one grain of shit for any of his fans or releasing his music anyway.

I remember an interview years ago, oh yeeeeeeeeaaars ago, with The The's Matt Johnson saying that his albums should cost 4 or 5 times more than others because of all the work he put into them, and how they were that much better than some manufactured pop crap or that. Maybe Dickie read that too.

on the other hand - the Marchanteuse has dropped her price with quite a steep curve, now only wanting a small donation for a cd-r, I believe.
