Non-hdd portable music players

I was wondering if anyone has had some encounters (yes, of
that sort) with any non-hard drive based players. I'm
curious about them because battery life should be longer,
should be more durable, possibly cheaper; draw back is of
course storage space. Yeah yeah I've looked at reviews on
line; just wanted some additional commentary.

Or is everyone using ipod/iriver/iaudio/whateverthefuckles?
I don't *think* 1 gig would leave me crapping, but having a
partition on a portable player to boot some OS would be
nice. ANYWAY

I've never considered installing an os like linux onto my
ipod. It is a cool thought.

This is the minidisc player I used to own. It is
an asbsolutely incredible piece of gear. The unit also
survived a year of intense use in Japan (About 4-6 hours of
playtime a day).
I must have dropped it (while on a bike) nearly 50 times
onto the streets of Japan but it still keeps doin' its
thang.

yo headphobes! I wouldn't actually run linux on it (or own
an ipod, but anyway), but just have a linux partition which
I could boot a PC off of.

I get really irritable handling MDs, and the have lots of
moving parts besides. Furthermore I don't have faith in
this ATRAC shit, nor do I want to deal with converted my
already lossy formats into it, nor will I probably be able
to at all (since not using windows).

Fuck. How much do you depend on the remote? I was thinking
about getting one of these fuckers for a bit, but damn I
wouldn't want that remote around.

It'll be cool when shit this side has a programmable
firmware on it.. or rather EASILY programmable firmware, oh
shit nevermind. What I'm saying is intelligent playlist
which I wouldn't need a nice interface for.

That is better than an ipod because it can record.
I never used the remote on my md player, and the
remote/screen for that looks like shit noodles.

ha ha ha. They have a charcoal version too, I guess they
wanted it to stand out.

I think I'll try one at a store some day, I'm really curious
how it handles (SHIT) without the remote (my opinion of it
isn't as bad as yours, but I certainly don't want to carry
it around!).

I don't care much about the line in, though it may be handy
sometimes. OGG is a must for me. What I'm wondering is why
sony, who cares a lot about locking people into their
products, hasn't made some hard drive player that can, for
instance, connect to to your camera and download the images
off of it. 40 gigs is a fucking shitload! Lots of good
uses.

a cool invention that i'd like to see invented is a
self-powered bluetooth hard drive. add that to a camera
with bluetooth capabilities, throw the hard drive into a
backpack, and you could be taking pictures forever.

replace bluetooth camera with portable mp3 player and it'd
be even nicer.

then again, bluetooth's bandwidth sucks, but it /is/ low
power. you could use some other wireless technology instead
of bluetooth, though.

That's a good idea, some sort of personal data card, always
with you and accessible from all devices.. It's also been
mentioned a lot, so I'm curious why a company like sony with
lots of different products hasn't jumped on that bandwagon
yet.

Note however that for the reasons in my initial post I think
a hard drive would be an even worse match for this, and a
ram or compact flash drive in a wifi (why bluetooth? wifi
transmitters are getting TEENY) housing would be much
better. but yeah, quibbleshits.

For anyone interested, I just blew a load of time poring
over this shit, and it wasn't pretty. Err, what I mean
is that prices are high, battery life isn't as good as it
should be, file transfer sometimes shitty (both interface
and speed).. basically the competition frenzy is only just
starting to reach these players. Fuck.

Since they're more durable, I'm going to see if I can grab
one cheap as shit off ebay. I honestly don't think the good
ones are worth the money otherwise (and the cheap ones
marinate penis).

PS It highly amuses me that they feel the need to combine
words in 'micro hard drive', and 'hard drive' isn't joined,
so they use 'microhard drive', totally fucking up the
meaning. fuckers.

I'm going to try to get one of these. It has ogg, can be
accessed as a USB drive, has an alarm, can record, has a
decent FM tuner, and seems to be comfortable to use.
Drawbacks are price (holy fucking shit expensive!!) and the
battery life isn't nearly what it should be (they have a new
one, the g3, which has 50 hours!!!).

I'll keep bumping this thread since there's so much
interest.

FUCK, I didn't see that, now I can't buy it =(

If anyone has first hand experience with this thing,
comments would be much appreciated. I should add that in
addition to the shorter-than-expected battery life, it also
has a short gap between tracks (very very small apparently).
It charges through USB but the whole point is I'll want to
have lots of computer-off time and still be able to listen
to music, so I'll get the ($9) charger. The device itself
can be purchased for $211, though there will probably be a
100 gigabyte model out 14 seconds before I purchase this
one, which I won't see until after I make the click, and
then I really WILL fuck a cheese grater.

I've got a song mini disc player, and I'm pretty pleased
with it. had it for 2 or 3 years now, usiing it almost
everyday when walking to and from school/work/uni.

Only problem is that some of the screws get loose a bit too
easy, but it still works :)

fuck; OLED, 40 hour battery, multiple formats (no
ogg but hopefully forthcoming). I'm posting this below.

It seems some tidbits have leaked regarding the speculated
ipod flash, and the old rumors are possibly true--no fucking
screen. ipods are pieces of shit and I hate how successful
the hype is. The are the most exorbitantly priced and least
featureful players on the market. Even if it has a screen I
bet it will still suck dicks.

I just ordered it; my dad offered to pay, which is how this
thread got started in the first place. I felt like having
an uncharacteristic splurge; I'm usually ridiculously
calculated regarding cost efficiency.

I'm going to be very careful.. and what I mean by cost
efficiency in my previous post is that most items are praced
on an exponential sort of curve where at one extreme minor
price difference incurs major quality change and the other
has exorbitant price changes yielding minor quality
improvement; anyway the point is to find the 'hump' which
maximizes bang/buck. Usually pretty simple.

BUT since I'm being funded on this, I feel like giving
myself a treat.

Hell the iaudio G3 is possibly a better purchase, I'm just
following my dick on this one.

the time independent schrodinger equation is driving me
insane.

(hbar/2m)*(second derivative to x of phi) + U(x)phi = E*phi

if yer dad's paying, ill shupup.. i exploit my parents money

never seen it before. I like discrete math much more than
'engineering math' and its applications.

I'll post some pictures when I get the U2; should come this
week. The main point will be that I can now power off my
computer more (since I use it as my audio player) and
hopefully decrease internet time / increase productivity.

It has a clock/alarm function, sweet.. and bookmarks to
within tracks, so I can jump to the best shit instead of
always fast-forwarding. instant boner.

The ogg support was of course a must, so my decision came
down to iaudio g3 vs. iaudio u2.

Alllllssssooooo I'd like to point out that it's a bad time
for ram players; they're still young on their feet and the
next year will bring ridiculous improvements (of course the
ones after that too, but my point is that one year will be
enough to solidify them and render them a good purchase). I
would wait but with all the time I spend at school I am
crapping for one.

I think 1 gig is enough.

the 130 advertised battery life is if you use the internal
batteries as well as the external battery case at the same
time.

lying fuckers.

don't get one.

also i cant fucking hear the thing. apparently there is
some shit eu rule that has limited the volume on portable
music players. my hearing isn't that good, so i can't
fucking listen to my music properly. waste of money it
was.

holy fucking shit.

first thing: it's small--ridiculously small. Sound quality
good, lots of playback features (easy to seek and loop).
Carefully designed interface (buttons have different
functions based on long or short presses, and all sorts of
different shit in each screen). Recording, radio..

something none of the reviews mentioned--the playlist
management is the shit. I can step through tracks by name
or by order on the ram, or I can browse through it as a set
of directories/folders (whatever structure you made when you
copied them over, that's what you see!). It's really easy
to browse through this and make a playlist.. that's right,
it's a nice library/playlist split.

I haven't tried the badass bookmark-within-song feature yet.
holy fucking shit. Took no time to set up. I just plugged
it in to the usb port (on a _linux_ machine), copied shit
over (_ogg_ files), and am listening.

fuck
