this has probably been posted up before, but figured it's
still makes for good reading for those who might've missed
it.

my pleasure! fav. part for me is when he says

And I made these sound bridge morphing modules and stuff
in it,” he says. “It’s interesting, because you’re
doing things to sound that just aren’t physically
possible.”

talk about pushing the envelope :)

it's simple...please do try to make a sound like he has
using classic means of production, like an guitar or an
piano.

it's in reference to something he say's before that, on page
3 (at the bottom). i didnt want to flat out say it because
then it would make reading the interview somewhat redundant.
:)

"At the same time, Devine discovered the music of Morton
Subotnick and Karlheinz Stockhausen. “This was the main
turning point in my musical explorations,” he says.
“Morton Subotnick was the first composer to influence me
to use analog modular synthesizers. Particularly, his main
works such as ‘Sidewinder, The Wild Bull and Silver Apples
of the Moon,’ where he used Donald Buchla’s modular
electronic music systems at San Francisco Tape Music
Center.

“I saw Subotnick’s work as completely dynamic, and
futuristic,” he adds. “He was creating sonic timbre
environments that were completely interchangeable and
complex. After hearing his work I began buying rare analog
modular synthesizers and cataloging sounds."

Sometimes i think artists create their first influences
later in life to look better.
Refering to Morton Subotnick and Karlheinz Stockhausen
sounds way better then saying something like "i saw the
video for Autechres "second bad vibel" on tv and i was like
fuck yeah!! and then i downloaded fruity loops"

All artist always have these great early music experiences
and most of them are probably telling the truth but some
must be talking shite. You never hear a indie rockstar talk
about Iron Maiden or Vanilla Ice , it is always " yeah my
dad introduced me to Frank Zappa and the Beatles early on "

" my first record i bought was Sgt Pepper "
" i used to secretly listen to my brothers Smiths records
when he was not around"

Bullshit!

I listen to his pieces and think, there's that smart Richard
Devine making special effects with his technology. Gosh he
must be clever. And that isn't particularly the mental
effect I want to achieve by listening to a piece of music.

Sometimes that is exactly the effect i want to achieve.
Listening to people like Devine is like going to a circus .

You sit there and get amazed by all the fucked up shit they
do.

The thing is , i feel i can make most of the effects these
people do with my software but putting it all together to a
6:37 min track is way over my head. I just don't have the
focus , patience and determination one would need for
sequencing something like that. It is impresive , most
impresive.

I dunno, it's kind of hard to describe. It kind of feels
like he's going through a Big Checklist entitled "Things
that sound kind of funny on top of this rhythm track" every
time i hear one of his musics. Like somebody sucked what
little soul was left in Intelligen Dance Musics into a big
boring bag of effects and preserved it in a solution of 100%
BoringWater.

I don't like him much.

Patelle is actually a pretty good track. I had very high
hopes for Devine when I heard it first. Unfortunately he
never evolved much beyond it except to shovel more funny
sounds on top.

Oh yeah, IMHO™ since some people have trouble

I'm sure John Maeda and his like are more of an influence on
RD than other musicians...

(and yeah, Patelle is a killer track - prob my fave of his -
but then again his music doesn't easily fit into the idea of
"tracks" as such...)..

Check out some Live or DJing RD if you find his recorded
outings a bit cold..

i fukin love maeda!! yes, devine like him too, seeing
lipswitch ep ;)

i really like this ep but was disapointed by the rest of his
works. autechre are much better (so are parmegiani,
farmersmanual). like aphex said, "its very simple to do
complicated music, everyone can do that, but its really hard
to do a beautiful trx" or something. i like some of devine's
music but often its just pile of breaks, sounds, that goes
nowhere...

Yes.

And I hear far too much electronic music that reflects
someone's grim determination to do something complicated and
impressive - it's like you can hear their pleasure and
inspiration evaporating in the first ten seconds as the
music turns into a death-march to the toilet to excrete the
finished product. I don't think I have to name any names.

I agree with you there. If I ever make a good track and get
signed or something. No fucking chance of that happening!!!

Anyway, I will answer the influences part honestly. Jive
Bunny and Black Lace were my first records bought. My Mum
played me Led Zep etc at a young age but i didn't take note
for years.

devine are really good but i like his simple ones more than

i was surprised to find myself remembering this from the
aphex twin diary thread:

dear diary, had fun today: pulled off some amazing feats of

hacking- legally changed all the government records to say
"grant cabbage wilson". then broke into nasa encrypted data

and deleted large chunks of it- can't wait to see what
happens. then commited probably the greatest act of
hacking/fraud in existence: i made people think that richard

devine is any good. haha

I like richard devine... he is pretentious, but the quality
of his output almost justify his pretentions. It would be
different if he was making crap, but he is not. Its just
great industrial glitch, with a lot of energy, and it sounds
amazing loud.

Plus he is a really nice guy in person, and when you go up
to him and tell him how much you like his music, he is
sincerly happy and thankfull for your compliments. He really
enjoys the music he makes, and you can tell.

could you explain how he is "pretentious"?

its just, this term gets thrown around a lot, and I wonder
how exactly do people mean this word, and how theyve come to
this conclusion.

must be lots of decision makers @ apple quite heavily into
idm for them to feature artists like this. either that, or
given they're quite a technical company, the engineers are
quite influencial on the decision makers.

it's cool elite in any case. i seem to always find my
interests dwindle into each other at some point.

offline thecurbcreeper from United States on 2005-01-01 23:18 [#01442054]
Points: 6045 Status: Lurker

i remember hearing on the board that someone had gone into
an apple store and heard some idm and i think someone else
did the same. many corporate stores are given cds to play at
their stores, so there could be some people at apple who are
into that thing. also, since a great deal of electronic
music is laptop/computer based now, some artists may have
deals with apple or other computer companies. something
along the lines of how rock stars are sponsored by equipment
companies.

also i remember reading devine had done some work on
soundtracks in the past.

as for his music, it's ok. some of seems too forced on the
technical half, but sometimes it works out for the good.

I don't really feel like explaining that much right now...
its just pretty obvious he is influenced more by punk and
metal than classical, but that is the style that he seems to
like to drop in interviews. Prolly more to emphasize the
compositional complexities of his music, and he really isn't
that far off in that reguard, but its still pretention.

The root word of pretention is pretend.

And please don't get mad at me for saying that. I am a huge
fan of richard devine. As far as I know, I was the only
person who bought a cd-r copy of asect dsect at the show
that I was at that night, a couple days before the studio
release was out - from richard devine - just so that I could
get it autographed. I am just trying to be honest.

dont think his best bits have anything to do with
