We Are The Music Makers | Volume One

offline Joyrex from watmm.com (United States) on 2004-12-29 19:35 [#01439735]
Points: 1389 Status: Lurker

Is now available for order - shipping January 4th. Head on
over to http://records.watmm.com/index.php?/orders/ for full
details.

Thanks to everyone who patiently waited for this, and for
all the support in getting the compilation out.

My apologies for the spam-ish message, but since this is
about good electronic music, it doesn't matter what forum or
site it appears on, eh?

Cheers and Happy New Year,

Joyrex

I expected such a reply from you - if you honestly think
that pirating a small release such as this is a good thing,
then there's no hope for you, and you're only hurting the
artists trying to establish themselves.

I was fucking about...chill homie.

Are there samples anywhere before I set about handing you
the cash?

listened to all the samples (well.. except the 1st one,
obviously).

File Under: Generic IDM.

nr. 17 being the obligatory and equally shameless
BoC-ripoff.

in short - not my cup of tea.

Flashbulb : Link not working.
Beans Haricots : Boring early 90's style Aphex ripoff.
Dane Jacobs : Not bad but not feeling it, it lacks energy.
Cell : Not a bad mid to late 90's Aphex ripoff.
Buz : A worse mid to late 90's Aphex ripoff.
Dead Eros : OK, Aphex ripoff, I quite like this one.
Electric Flux : Boring BoC ripoff.
Greenbank : I quite like this one.
Entorwellian : I suppose if you like ambient this is OK. I
don't.
Kabal : Not enough to comment on. I suppose if a kicking
beat came in somewhere it could be good.
Rushden : Another early 90's Aphex style track.
Synthetrix : I think I'd like the full version.
Ampersand Music : Trying to sound like Snares...fails.
We Are Legal : More ambient noodling, which sounds
effortless.
Emily Apple : Fun, but the percussion is too repetative for
the style of track.
Zmalloc : Another BoC wannabe falls short of the mark.
Chaos Machine : And yet another BoC wannabe. I liked this
one though.

Overall : Bland, forgettable. Not one of the tracks makes
me want to buy the album. It would have been good if you
had some more energetic tracks in there. Good luck anyway.

don't get me wrong. I admire Joyrex for doing this...it's
good to see. I don't know how the selection process for the
album was done but there are a lot of middle of the road
generic IDM tracks on there, and I know frm listening to
stuff on the EKT board there are people there making awesome
tunes.

you should know, there's a story behind my track. it was
made as an april fools gag.. this was before the old tunes
tracks, etc, had made their presence known.

i managed to fool just about everyone (including members of
this board.. there's a thread if you search) into thinking
it was a boc track from a tape i bought off ebay.. when i
finally revealed that i had actually made the track myself,
joyrex offered to put it on the compo.

it was fully intended to sound exactly like boc. there's no
samples, or anything, though.. made purely in fl4.

I appreciate your critique... the page does tell how the
tracks were selected (blind vote by the community), and the
samples do not do the complete songs justice, IMO. I've
fixed the first track (apostrophies got converted into "/"
in the filename and at 4AM I somehow missed this :)

BTW, this is an actual pressed CD, not a CDR, with
professionally printed artwork. Proceeds from this will go
into Volume Two, which I cannot wait to hear what everyone
submits as so many people (including the artists on this
compilation) have grown so much musically. Details about
Volume Two are coming soon... I just have to finish a few
more sections of WATMM Records before I do that.

Plus the rest of WATMM...

you should talk aphex into 'donating' a song for the vol.2 -
that would sure make me buy it. you can set the price as
high as 40 quid too.

Fact: Joyrex has always nice and unusual avatars.

I don't like the frame on this one tho. A simple one is
nicer.

You might have been better just selecting the tracks
yourself...or choosing two or three people with different
tastes to do the selection. I know it has been mentioned
before but there is a slight bias on your board towards the
Aphex style stuff and on this board slightly more towards
Autechre or Glitch style stuff.

I just think it would have been good to try and push the
envelope a little with the tracks. I suppose the long lead
tme between conception and release haven't helped much, but
I expect you will have a better time with volume 2. Good
luck again.

the same thing happened with the Autechre remix thing -
weirder, maybe more unorthodox tracks quickly disappear.

a recordlabel should release what it deems to be most
interesting (seeing as you won't be in it for the money -
excepting Rephlex ofcourse) - a recordlabel by vote sounds
dodgy.

I like it for what it is - a community based collection of
tracks.
I'd like to buy it, but would feel better if it was 10.00
dollars instead of 13.00.

overall, good talent is there. funny how some of you people
are so quick to judge and compare. hehehe. lame, but not
surprising.

looking forward to hearing the tracks in full length.

Don't be a prick. It is a business venture for Joyrex. I,
along with other people, aren't going to hand over their
hard earned cash for something they don't feel is worth it
just because it is their community release. When
reviewing/commenting you naturally compare them to the
artists they are attempting to immitate as that is the
natural benchmark. Plus $13 is fuck all, about £6.50, so
what are you moaning about, for a full album, that is
fucking cheap.
