i've heard good and bad about midi and can't exactly make up my mind if i'll use it. maybe one controller would be good for various things and what not. it sounds complicated though with all the numbers and parameters and directory crap.
please tell me what you think about midi.

Hi Hevquip,
Saying 'MIDI' is crap is basically shooting yourself in the foot. I can't understand why anyone says such things.
MIDI is only the communication protocol used by synths to communicate with one another, and was one of the greatest and most useful things ever to happen to music. It allows for greater flexibility etc.
I don't even know why I'm arguing the point. Saying MIDI is crap is one of the most downright dumbest fucking things I've ever heard anyone say in my sorry-assed life!
So my answer would be:
Yes, it is good to use MIDI (lol).
Just make sure that you don't get confused between MIDI signals and actual audio signals, they're completely different.
By the way, an Ochre track currently features as 'Song of the Week' @ www.electronicbboard.com
Check it out for some nice glitchy click-beats.
Chris.

I agree with Chris. Midi is very useful. One can easily use a sampler, drum machine, synth and computer as a perfect example of a symbiotic relationship. The only problem with midi is that it can get pricey. Take the cost of each machine you want to use, then add in cost for midi wires and probably a mixer board. Thats alot of money there.

hmmm...that's odd, i dont remember myself saying midi was crap, and if it was crap to me, why would i bother to ask for others opinions when i wouldn't care?

Yeah he only asked the question guys (i assume). But i myself have actually just purchased Cubase vst 5.0 and this
Powerful PC and i really don't know what to do next being such a newcomer does anybody have any advice?
Are there any programs that are 1. Easy to use 2. Packed with banks of sounds to use and edit as you wish. 3.Great sounding.
Obviously I know thats just a small part of the process but I think that it would help if I could have some suggestions.
P.s I work In a Virgin Megastore and they played Windowlicker to the wonderful public today (its being released on a compilation).
Interesting to hear it next to Oxide and Neutrino's tune.

Hevquip,
Sorry, I should have made it a little clearer. My post was in no way directed towards you or anyone else on the board. I just hear so many ignorant comments made about MIDI (and your not one of them - just to make it clear), that's all.
Did my post seem targeted at you? Sorry, I got carried away! I thought I should've made it a little clearer just as I pressed 'post'.
Oops,
Chris.

Speaking of Wondowlicker, I heard it on the telly this evening being used to advertise Emerdale (I think - either that or Coronation Street). I was a bit surprised.
Hey The Pistons..., try checking out IK Multimedia's Sampletank - it's a VST instrument that comes packed with sounds, plus the ability to add more. Should be cheap, dunno what it sounds like though. Check out KVR VST resources for more info on other VSTis (www.kvr-vst.com).
Hevquip, check out the SOS forum for any MIDI info (or any other computer/recording music related stuff) and decent articles - www.sound-on-sound.co.uk
Places like www.intermusic.com and www.sonicspot.com are good for music info too. Try Shareware Music Machine (http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/) for cool shareware programs too.
Hope this helps to clear up the little misunderstanding, :)
Chris.

for midi soundcards, get the soundblaster live! because it has the ability to use soundfonts, plus it already has plenty of good sounds...i've produced heepz of tunes using just cakewalk pro audio 6.0 and they sound quite professional without fancy effects and real recorded parts...

midi is good- but it's also fun to unplug it in the middle of a live set and let all your device clocks go back to their original settings... but that's just me

it's also worth praise to do a live p.a. without midi... sorta gives you more flexibility, but there's the ever present likelihood of a train wreck... especially if you
a: have more than one rythm device b: use tap tempo c: if you have no idea how to use your mixer (happens to me quite a bit)

The "MIDI is crap" is mainly an Internet misunderstanding. To average Joe, MIDI is some thin sounding soundfile. He has no idea that MIDI really is a remote control protocol for MIDI equipment, such as synthesizers. MIDI only sends out note data and other info, such as continuous controller data. The sound comes from the equipment receiving this information. It can be a crappy, thin-sounding Soundblaster card or a fat K2000 synth.
MIDI is great. Well, that's like saying telephones are great.

if you use samplers, drummachines, synths and remotable synth software, you will need MIDI. MIDI is one of the nicest languages i've ever used...
