The Disintegration Loops

"Basinski played this track as a loop and then recorded the
sounds created as the original tape disintegrated into
nothing."

[link]

"it's impossible: no one could create a script this
contrived. Yet, apparently, it happened. William Basinski's
four-disk epic, The Disintegration Loops, was created out of
tape loops Basinski made back in the early 1980s. These
loops held some personal significance to Basinski, a
significance he only touches on in the liner notes and we
can only guess at. Originally, he just wanted to transfer
the loops from analog reel-to-reel tape to digital hard
disk. However, once he started the transfer, he discovered
something: the tapes were old and they were disintegrating
as they played and as he recorded. As he notes in the liner
notes, "The music was dying." But he kept recording,
documenting the death of these loops.

"These recordings were made in August and September of 2001.
Now, this is where the story gets impossible. William
Basinski lives in Brooklyn, less than a nautical mile from
the World Trade Centers. On September 11, 2001, as he was
completing The Disintegration Loops, he watched these towers
disintegrate. He and his friends went on the roof of his
building and played the Loops over and over, all day long,
watching the slow death of one New York and the slow rise of
another, all the while listening to the death of one music
and the creation of another. As I said, it's impossible. The
music, however, is beautiful, subtle, sad, frightening,
confusing, and ultimately uplifting. What's he created here
is a living document: a field recording of orchestrated
decay. It sounds like nothing else I've heard, yet, at its
core, it's the simplest and most familiar music I can
imagine." [...more]

I don't know.. this kind of stuff seems really boring to
me.

it's the same with "venice" - I just don't hear it. it goes
on and on and on and on and on.

on the other hand I do like the Hafler Trio - but there is
much more change in there, and a strange form of agression.

this just sounds bland.

You think the hafler trio actually varies their sound that
much? All the releases I heard were one sound for 20
minutes, with a change of 5degrees in the filter resonance
throught the entire thing

really. this sounds much more like philip jeck and it's
totally different stuff from what fennesz and tim hecker
do...

it's my favourite kind of music i think...so sublime but so
much happening at the same time. awesomeness!!

Yeah, but this seems to have soul.

Plus it has a strong idea. Personally, I like the idea of
music that is dissintigrating a lot more than doing field
recordings of wind, and mixing it with some over-filtered
crowdspeech.

i'd prefer to separate the concept from the music. the
music should be able to stand on its own without having to
rely on the context of 9/11 or knowing that the tracks
represent the actual physical decay of the original tape
loops. that said, there is something attractive in the idea
that this process of decay was inevitable and uncontrollable
and unreproduceable, and not programmed or the consequence
of some filter or turning of a switch.

the discs are what they are, overlapping loops of simple,
melancholy melodies that gradually decay into distortion and
eventually gaps of silence. if you like lofi melancholy
drones and don't mind repetition and slowly evolving sound
then you might take great pleasure in these recordings...

yeah it's a super cool idea, but i have yet to hear anything
from the series that actually did it for me... if you want
to hear William Basinski stuff that is more dynamic, check
out the album he did with Richard Chartier for Spekk this
year...

that album is more like Hafler Trio stufff... but then...
some Hafler Trio stuff really is like a single drone...
other Hafler stuff is a very very far cry from that...

LAZY_TITLE third one up

' Japanese-only DVD release. "On September 11th I was on my
roof in Brooklyn, less than 1 nautical mile from the World
Trade Center, our beacon, our compass: that which towered so
far above every other skyscraper in NYC, my nightlight. My
neighbors and I witnessed the end of the world as we knew it
that day. We saw those towering structures collapse before
our very eyes, on a crystal clear day we saw the
incomprehensible change of landscape: like a volcano
disappearing behind trees, we saw this magnificent
minimalist human structure disappear before our very eyes.
We were appalled. Despite the catastrophic fires, we had no
idea that these gigantic structures would collapse...
cascade below the lower Manhattan skyline. But it happened.
We were in shock. We sat on the roof terrace in lawn chairs
and watched the fires burning all day into night with the
Disintegration Loops playing in the background. The human
scale of the catastrophe we couldn't even comprehend at the
time. That would come next, in tears and agony. This was the
end of the world we all knew was coming sooner or later, but
had forgotten about...put in the back of our minds. That
evening I recorded on video the static image of the lower
Manhattan skyline billowing smoke as the last hour of
daylight turned to darkness. The film is entitled
Disintegration Loop 1.1 and is dedicated to the memory of
those who perished in the atrocities of September 11th,
2001." -- William Basinski. Video, 63m, NTSC Region 0. '

People need something to crystallize their interest in
ambience like seeding the clouds - maybe it's a breakup
album for you, or you like the cover art, or a critic told
you how to listen to it. Whatever. But there has to be an
entry point that makes it more than amorphous meandering to
you. Sometimes it's just good titles.

For the Disentegration Loops it's the fact that it's got a
heck of a back-story. Would it get any attention at all if
it were presented without the story of how they played the
tapes until they disintegrated, and how it's tied to the
collapse of the towers? Maybe not. But it's an entry point
and it works.

(Fennesz on the other hand is far too musical to be
considered in the same breath as this, or Tim Hecker, or
just about anything else - his stuff is as much about
harmony and melody as texture and sound design)

perhaps it is exactly like conceptual art, where the concept
itself is the work of art, not so much what is produced -
except for that the concept itself isn't interesting
enough.

I just don't hear it. to me it doesn't sound so much
amorphous, just meandering.

I don't know, I find the music itself wuite haunting so it
isn't just the concept. The concept was the guy standing
outside the club drumming up business and the music is the
pussy shaking it onstage.
