My girlfriend is a math minor, and she is doing a
presentation on the Fibonacci sequence, so she asked me to
compose a piece utilizing the fibonacci sequence in a
composition.

Briefly:

the melodic lines are based on the sequence.
1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233

starting on D, and assigning D as 1, D# as 2, E as 3, F as
4, F# is 5, G is 6, G# is 7, A is 8, A# is 9, B is 10, C is
11, C# is 12 etc etc etc

the sequence is thus:

D=1
D#=2
E=3
F#=5
A=8
D=13
A#=21
B=34
G#=55
F#=89
C#=144
F#=233

that bars are also in order of the sequence. One bar of 1/4,
one bar of 2/4, one bar of 3/4, one bar of 5/4, one bar of
8/4

this phrase repeats itself as the basic structutre.

the phrase places once, then changes, plays 2 times,
changes, plays 3 times. Then the next section adds the
strings.

The 16th note divisions of the celesta occur on the 1st,
2ns, 3rd, 5th, 8th, 13, etc 16 notes of the bars, but the
sequence starts over at the beggining of each bar.

the marimba part plays on beats 1, 2, 3, 5, 8 (also starting
over at the beggining of each bar)

both the celsta and marimba then begins to be doubled
starting on the next pitch of the sequence. so where it was
1, 2, 3, 5, 8 etc, its now playing 1+2, 2+3, 3+5, 5+8, 8+13
etc.

the bongos follow the same pattern as the celesta line. but
with added down beats on the back beats for pulse.

the cello line also follows the note sequence, but the notes
last for the duration of each bar, repeating at octaves.
Each succeding bar adds more rythms with the next note from
the sequence.

the final section retrogrades (plays backwards) the celesta,
marimba, and bongo parts.

Its pretty academic (but hey, was writen for a math
presentation!)

Anyways, I think the results are suprisingly interesting,
and even somewhat pleasent.

This is really interesting stuff Zeus. Good job. I've been
an admirer of Schoenberg for some time.. it sounds like your
ideas are comparable.. are at least your working methods.
The piece itself actually reminded me of some Steve Reich
pieces I have on CD.. for whatever it's worth.

the fibonacci sequence is a very emotional sequence, its

it is the study of "figures and numbers"."
I could just as easily say that music is a theoretical
subject about scales and frequency variations.
Generalising like that doesn't get to the heart of what the
concepts in a subject do to someone emotionally.
Math is emotional.

I don't know anything about scales or frequency variations,
nor have I ever learned any musical theory, but still I make
music. You can't do math without knowing how.

Normally Zeus is one of the most talented musicians on the
board, and I haven't heard a song by him I haven't liked
before, but this was crap, and since Zeus normally makes
amazing music, and this piece was based upon maths, I can
conclude that using maths for music sucks, while Zeus still
rocks.

let's not make this into an argument of whether music and
math are related. Zeus obviously proved they are. and if you
had any real music knowledge you'd know that composition
does have math involved in it.
but of course, math is not for everyone ... nor are
emotions, buddy.

people like that peice, i do too. and you are free to stick
to your own opnion. just try giving feedback instead of
'crap'.

I've heard more tracks based on maths, calculations and two
that were created by random filter manipulations that the
