I just think FM sythesis is the best. The sounds u can
create with FM just beats any other type of synthesis. but
thats just my opinion. I wish there were more artists like
Aphex who use FM as much. Or maybe there is but i just don't
know of them??

I got a Yamaha TX81Z, I heard Squarepusher uses that. I
ain't used it yet though, I think I need reverb or it'll
sound CHEEZY as hell. FM IS going to make a real mainstream
comeback, I'll be quids in, the new 303's!

My friend has a TX81Z and i thought it was pretty good. Does
sounds alot better with Reverb though. Once u get the hang
of Programming FM synths u can get nice n nasty instruments
out of them all really, just takes alot of time to get it to
sound how u want. TX81Z is wicked for sharp heavy basses. I
got a old DX7 myself and i wouldn't get rid of it for
nothing. Best synth i've ever used. TX81z is basically a DX7
just with less operators and algorythms.

If i was u B3n i would download a Editor for it if u don't
already have 1. It will make Editing the sounds much easier.

Yeah, I will, as I said, I haven't really used it apart from
listening to the presets (which I knew were bad anyway). I
know its a powerul little machine if you get the hang of FM.
I thought about a TX7 too (DX7 in a box)

1 of the things with FM is that u rarely get the sound ur
wanting. all the best sounds come from just playin around
with everything I've found. mainly the EG rates and Levels
and Algorythms. Try turning up the feedback and changing
algorythm until u get a raspy sharp kinda sound then smooth
it off with the EG rates and Levels and operator levels and
then try putting some amplitude mod on the operator that is
making the sharp sound. so u can move the mod wheel and
change the amount of amplitude mod. u can get some wicked
sounding basses like that but the best thing is just to play
around with all the paremeters and see what u get.

types of synthesis?

it's too much to explain and i can't be bothered to type
about every different type so just go here ->
http://www.sonicspot.com/guide/synthesistypes.html

it should explain it better than i could anyway

FM is nice but you do have to mix in some Analogue stuff in
as well or things begin to feel a little brittle & dry...
(and a bit 80s...)...

RDJ used a DX100 all over SAWI and his early stuff...thats a
pretty crappy 2 op FM synth if I remember correctly... His
main trick with it was to layer OSC's on top of each other,
one a fifth above the other... give you a kinda chordy
effect....

And Yep, agreed, on the words about how tricky it is to
think up a sound and then create it in FM...Best bet is
either to go random or start with a preset and mod from
there...

And FM Synthesis isn't any harder than Additiv/Subtractive
synthesis; it's just different....if you want to hear the
king of the DX7, listen to some ENO...he once had to spend a
few months in hopsital & ended up reading the DX7 manual &
teaching himself everything from in there; then when he got
out of hosp, the DX7 was his bitch!!!...
