2004 Poor year for new music?

All in all I think 2004 have been poor compared to the
previous years, when it comes to new music. Fennesz, Sqp,
Bola and Mark Lanegan has been my favourites, but I really
didn't get that excited over anything. Is this just
an old man talking, or am I right?

Most disappointing was the "missing" BoC-release (announced
fall, 2003?), and that there was no follow-up to the new
killer-arcola-12" by Brothomstate released in january. Fuck,
it's almost a year ago.

Check out "Sketchie - Rain By High Latern", one of the best
releases of the year in my opinion. Some samples here,

Track 1
Track 2

I think I've just been to lazy to seek out new music. I'm
just hellbent on catching up on old stuff.

And the releases by Buddy Peace And Zilla are some of the
best shit in a long time. And MF Doom released MM Food, so
it has been a good year for me.

I think this is the first year since Incunabula, with no
release. Disturbing...

Yeah, lots of good albums... just the previously
'consistent' labels seem to be releasing some off stuff.
When was the last time anybody got excited about a new Warp
release (not counting !!!... cause they rock hard)

The secret frequency crew released an exceptional cd this
year, as did o9, and the new Otto Von Scharach is by far the
best thing he has ever done, and an extremely original and
fun album.
Venetian Snares: Chrome Cylinder Box was spectacular.
Deadbeat - Something borrowed something blue was beautifull.

The new loscil was great.
Kid 606 - Who still kill sound.
Decepticon - Lost Subject.
Xela - Tangled Wood.
Dom and Roland - Chronology.
Jedi Mind Tricks - Legacy of Blood.
Mastadon - Leviathon.
Superpitcher's People was amazing (although the rest of the
album fell short).
Handsome Boy Modeling School - White People.
Tom Waits - Real Gone.
RJD2 - Since We Last Spoke.

For the last 5-6 years I have always discovered a lots of
new music, and at the same time, bands/artist I like have
released brilliant stuff. Because of that, at the end of the
year, I have always been saying things like "OMFG this have
been a good year. Even better than last year!" This is the
first year I look back and are not really satisfied.

poorer than 2003, probably...
and the deaths of Jhonn Balance, John Peel and ODB didn't
really help...

but there were some nice things nevertheless.

I've heard more music than ever. I bought a laptop a year
ago, and an Ipod this summer, so this is the first year I
literally could get all the music I wanted. I have no idea
how many 2004 albums I've heard. I would guess somewhere
between 100 and 200.

Several good ones. I've been entertained quite well. But no
albums that can compete with my favourites from the
previous...let's say five years. Maybe I just appreciated
music more when I actually had to buy all my records, but
it's still my opinion that 2004 have been the weakest year
in a long time. Where is the future classics? Where are the
outstanding records?

well, for me there's usually like 1-3 future classic albums
per year..and this year is no exception regarding that.

the new saul williams, mosdef, squarepusher, and mf doom
were all very good releases, IMO.

fuck, 'venus n. 17' alone made '04 worth it.

also, mothboy, mad ep, and a lot of the adnoiseam stuff
coming out is really fucking good.

Same here. The back catalogue of music keeps me overwhelmed,
I generally don't hear a lot of 2001 releases until 2002,
2003 till 2004, yaddabobadda.

The year has been superb from what I HAVE heard. What yeaar
hasn't been? Every year in music has been amazing, period.

Not enough by far. Not enough time. I think it would have
been ok if we'd heard from a couple of the a-listers but
that dont mean its a bad year.

I think 2005 will be a sotrmer though. New Aphex, Snares,
and I reckon we may get treated to some new Autechre.

But then again i would say a lot of our focus was on BOC and

I totally forgot about the Delerium Cordia... another one to
the list.I don't think this has been a particularly bad year
for music.

Every decade, it seems the shape of music seems to change,
forming near the first two years, becoming noticeable in the
third and fourth year, and peaking around the seventh eighth
and ninth year. Most people from the previous decade either
take with the new decade, or leave it in exchange for any
previous decades they seem to have taken to. Its called
evolution.

Next year can be great with releases from all the "biggies"
on Warp. It can also be the year when all the old daddys
disappoints us. But I don't think so.

Yes, there wasn't anything "massive" IMO.

Still lots of little good things- the Buddy peace and Zilla
mix, Milanese - 1up, Cane - Teknotest, etc.
