i mostly agree with pitchforkmedia. idm needs to evolve.

drukqs is still the best electronic album to me because of
the analogue production sound. it actually sounds like real
music (physical and warm) instead of crashing computer
noises set to the same breaks and nintendo samples, of which
squarepusher is the biggest offender out of the big guys.
drukqs is the only electronic album i've heard since music
has the right to children that's tried to advance the genre
in some way (to a lesser extent i'd also give honours to
chris clark's empty the bones of you and autechre's draft
7.30), only too many people refuse to acknowledge this fact.
now we get analord and a thousand nerds with free software
making noise for other nerds. it's all up to boards of
canada now; if they don't advance the genre with their new
album, then it's all over.

random recommendation: have you heard the arcade fire? i'm
not sure if you're still in your rock phase, but read
pitchfork's review of funeral. i agree with it.

parts...lovely stuff!!

Ultravisitor got 7.9, which is a bit fairer.

Although the reviewers are pretty dumb... apparently the
Ultravisitor title track is like a longer version of My Red
Hot Car. Um not really...?

I think Go Plastic is at least worthy of an 8, and I don't
like how the review suggests breakbeats should be left in
tha past. It keeps saying he rehashed old ideas but I don't
see that at all.

offline AlbertoBalsalm from Reykjavík (Iceland) on 2004-12-05 06:47 [#01416291]
Points: 9459 Status: Lurker

go plastic is a really unique record. he didn't rehash
anything from his previous albums, that's total bollocks. he
took his drill & bass masterskills to a whole new level with
all kinds of innovative techniques, whether it was the drum
programming or the sound manipulation. if rehashing is
something he considers to be using the amen break again and
again, he doesn't know shit coming out of his ass. he's
always used it in very creative way, the things he has
managed to squeeze out of that break is phenomenal and true
work of genius.

Like Aphex Twin, Squarepusher exists in a sphere that,
for many non-diehard fans, has to put up double the cash to
reap the same rewards as it did before folks already knew
what to expect.
- Dominique Leone

So true. Electronic music is held to an unfair standard of
innovation. No one listens to blues or rock and says "Dear
god, these people are still using the pentatonic scale?!"

One of the primary pleasures of listening to
experimental-ish electronica is the thrill of novelty when
someone invents a weird new technique or song structure...
and because of that every electronic composer is expected
(or at least desired) to mutate into near unrecognizability
with every release.

So I guess what I'm saying is electronic music can either
constantly evolve and be the scout of new territories, or it
can work familiar territory and become a genre which it
already is in many ways. When you have as many people doing
it as there are now it can't help but be a genre because
only a tiny minority of them have the vision to transcend
its boundaries.

I'd agree that Go Plastic is worth 5/10 and UltraVisitor is
worth 7/10. Go Plastic is a really average middle of the
road album and certainly not the masterpeice of work some
people make it outto be.

i tend to disagree, but its purely a taste argument, im not
saying that go plastic is some gigantic step forward or
whatever, i just think its a hell of a good album.

people that are too focused on mostly electronic music may
value this album a bit more than it deserve i think...it's
great, sure, but there are other very inspiring musicians

i really like it, for me its spushers best - its all taste,
also i really enjoy only electronic now, as ive listened to
non electronic for too long

Hear Ye, Hear Ye! The breakbeat is hereby extinct! And for
that matter, so is the bass guitar and the synthesizer! All
of these are now obsolete in electronic music and no one may
use them! I am Pitchfork, and as I declare it, so shall it
be done!

In these days of the intarweb I'm surprised people have to
agree or disagree with Pitchfork as though it meant anything
more than anyone else's opinion. I mean it's not liek the
bad old days when we had to read Rolling Stone or Spin for
reviews instead of getting a Slovenian or Polish
perspective.
