ARG!
For MONTHS now all of my downloads have been timing out, on slsk, from the web, etc..
Really small files are ok, but anything over like 4 or 5MB will stop at a random time during download. Sometimes I can just cancel it and start downloading again and it builds onto the temp file.. so I can eventualy get what I'm after, but this is a huge pain in the ass..
So whaddaya think? Service Pack?.. Router issue? My ISP has been zero help. This happens on every pc on my home network (all running xp pro). What the hell did I do?
Heeehlp!

you have to set the max limit to the # of tcp connections higher or something. theres a patch that does that

check for usual virus/spyware; for spyware i recommend spybot. might be useful to get a 'mtu tweaker'; for dsl it usually needs to be set at 1492 or something but it all depends on your isp.
this awfully sounds like your isp is either shaping you (i.e. "limiting" your download speed) or they're just saturated with too many users and not enough bandwidth.

that might help. i guess other possibilities include a flaky network card or a modem, too.
know anybody else on the same isp, preferably in the same area? see if they're having the same problems.

maybe the isp is throttling you or something. do you know anyone else in your building who uses the same isp? do they have the same problem?

btw, if your isp are throttling you, 1) tell them to get fucked and turn that shit off, and 2) try lowering your mtu to something stupid like 576. it'll mean overall the internet is slower, but if the problem is caused by throttling, it'll mean less errors and dropouts. i can give the technical explanation why, but i'm sure you don't want to be bored further.

i have this problem too, it seems to be a problem of the slsk server. there's a thread at the slsk board about it called 'initializing'. noone was able to help me, though. one thing helps sometimes: disconnect dsl, reconnect. if you have winxp, there IS an actual fix.

Jason Holland > I run a motherfucking radiostation. I deal with large files on a daily basis as a part of keeping our business running smoothly. If your company is unable to provide me with reliable service I can understand that, but I'll need a straight answer, not thinly veiled accusations. By the way, can I have your full name?
