Ah, okay then - that's why the previews reminded me so strongly of the Tenenbaums. It goes on my to-see list.

the trailors for Royal Tennenbaums and Rushmore were better than the preview for Life Aquatic but i am still itchin to see it.
wes anderson is also going to direct a stop motion film based on Roald Dahl's Fantastic Mr. Fox
for which i am also excited!

I saw this movie this weekend. I absolutely loved it. It is, once again very much like a typical wes anderson film. silly, innocent and with quirky characters. But it is not a total re-hashing of his previous films.
for example, LIfe Aquatic has nudity, violence, death, claymation, pirates..etc. it is much more heartwrenching than any of his movies, but not in a forced or sappy way.
it is also much more ambitious, in my opinion, than even Royal Tennenbaums. in budget and scale as well as emotionally.
anyway, i loved it. it was much better than i was expecting. better than his previous movies though? it's too early to say yet. i'll have to watch it a bunch more times but i suspect, like his other films, it will grow on me with each viewing!

Awesome movie. The live action backgrounds and visuals were amazing, the overall atmosphere was very nostalgic feeling.
*spoiler* one of the funniest parts is where hes shooting at pirates in a speedo and a robe.

I totally fell in love with the huge cutaway set of the Belafonte wiht the dolphins swimming under it!
for this reason alone it is worth seeing this one in the theatre on the big screen!

oh my - this (excerpt from a) review just made my genitalia shrivel up and drop off:
"Wes Anderson's vanity project finds him regressing from the perceptive dissertation on American families that was "The Royal Tenenbaums" to the arch callowness of its precursor "Rushmore" and the result is a slight, intermittently amusing picture that dares you to get it but smugly predicts you won't."

how can a movie predict that the viewer won't "get it"? sounds like more bullshit rhetoric from an amateur reviewer who doesn't really know why he didn't like a film. i'm sure this reviewer then went on to argue that there is "nothing to get." there's thousands of similar reviews all over amazon.
i liked this movie a lot...

the use of words typically paints a picture of an inept reviewer.

yeah, i didn't mean to imply i thought the review was from imdb, it just brought to mind so many reviews from amazon.
the commercial critics have been pretty savage, as well.
was this film supposed to be the third in a trilogy?

your horoscope:
a movie that you will like is made to seem unappealing by an incompetent and shallow reviewer.
a movie that you will not like is made to seem appealing by an articulate and thoughtful reviewer.
you will go see "the life aquatic" and come out saying "i rather liked that" in your native tongue.

"Rushmore" is one of my favourite films of all time.
I was disappointed in "The Royal Tenenbaums" though - it felt like more of the same, but more forced.
so I'm kind of weary of this new venture. I'll go and see it ofcourse, hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised.

"life aquatic" is most certainly more of the same...
i didn't think "royal tenenbaums" felt "forced" at all, any more than "the mixed up files of mrs. basil e. frankweiler."
