Is fucking awesome. I was thinking about Peel before and decided to give another listen to album for the first time in months. It still has the ability to make me smile. Brilliant.

I was hoping to see a picture of a latex trout mask for sale, which I probably would of bought.
Do you have a link with info on this album?

You don't need info...you just need to get the album and listen to it with an open mind.

Great album! I hate to be such a leechy fan, but I tracked this down because I knew Capt. Beefheart was one of Sean Booth's favorites.. so I thought it couldn't be half bad. Didn't know he (Don Van Vliet) was friends with Frank Zappa at the time..
anyway, fantastic album.. ingenious it in its madcappery

actually, zappa produced the album. great album!
@deadeight: yes, bat chain puller is a great song. i think it's from shiny beast, which is also a good album (though quite different from trout mask).

I really like The Spotlight Kid/Clean Spot, maybe even more than Trout Mask Replica. The music is more Normal Sounding or something, but still stupidly excellent.

The Spotlightkid is a great album. Nearly bought that Trout Mask once but decided against it, think I'll give it a shot. I was told that Zappa fed them all on lentils and stuff for x amount of time until they were far gone enough to produce trout mask.

Zappa did no such thing!
Don van Vliet/captain beefheart did that himself. they lived in a sort of commune, eating a cup of soj-beans each every day.. well, that is, except Van Vliet himself, who would recieve packages from his parents containing food so while everyone else was getting to look pastier by the minute, Van Vliet looked shiny and healthy..
Zappa more or less came into this "commune" and thought it would be a good idea that they use the acoustics of the different rooms of the house - so each musician would record his part in a different room.
supposedly, this sounded great, but Van Vliet got a bit paranoid, was thinking Zappa wasn't giving the recordings a real chance by letting them record in a "real recordingstudio", so they did it all again, this time in a recordingstudio.
"trout mask replica" is great, but I would rather go for "shiny beast" - it has weirdness on it ("bat chain puller" but you'll suddenly find a song where Van Vliet actually croons ("Harry Irene"), etc. it's all over the place.
as I was doing a bit of research at the time, you'll find a few nice "trout mask" anecdotes in this thread. :)

not completely.. it is true that one member wanted to leave, but he wasn't strapped to a chair - Don van Vliet did fire a shitload of intimidating questions at him, playing nasty little mindgames.

amazing album. i listen to it about once a week
btw the fish on the cover is real, and apparently was pretty old and smelly by the time they got the covershoot done. beefheart recalls it as a less than pleasant experience.
