are you speaking of people that use laptops instead of turntables or real instruments? people that fiddle with electronic nobs and switches? adjusting the reverb on a sample can hardly be considered playing music..

I'd rather say that those 'quasi' use laps for making amorphic structures which they dare to call music.

it sounds more like the problem is that you don't understand music.

so you're saying improvisational music isn't music... electronic music isn't music... conceptual or experiemental music isn't music... anything that doesn't fit into your personal, rigid ideas about what music is isn't music.

people who don't play instruments don't make music? what do you call the music that they make?

With all the respect, what the hell is music!?
Where are borders? If I, let's say, record a street noise, then hardly edit it with lots of fx, is it reasonable to call it music!?

yes. music (since the modern art movement) is now defined as "humanly-organized sound". that means that any time a human being is responsible for creating or putting sounds together in any way, it is music.

the traditional definition was invented by the early-music composers (back in medieval times) who did not allow for any sort of music outside of their extremely narrow views, which included rules like, "music never uses tri-tones or dischordance because these are the disharmonic chords of the devil." so eventually people started realising, hey - that's not true - music can have more than one scale, people in other cultures have their own music, music can be made by other instruments, etc. and in the past fifty years, ethnomusicologists have refined the definition of music to what it is now.

yes it is a broad definition. it has to be. the word "music" in no way describes personal preference or quality. if it did, virtually none of the music you and i love would be considered music.
