__ PHOENECIA Bio:::
Appropriating their name from (probably) the
first culture of the Old World to explore the New,
Phoenecia, aka Joshua Kay and Romulo Del
Castillo, was inaugurated in Miami, Florida, USA
in 1997. Phoenecia's recordings echo the phenomena
in the slow contemplative way the music evolves,
experimental techno rhythms emerging from
strangely glutinous sounding electronic textures.
Initially overtly influenced by Warp Records' duo
of wayward electronica trailblazers Autechre and
the Aphex Twin, Phoenecia received early acclaim
for "Randa Roomet," a superb 12-inch double pack
for the same then Sheffield, England-based label.
On their subsequent self-released album, Kay and
Del Castillo's inspirations were more heavily
submerged and less readily identifiable.

The duo themselves asserted dub - or at least
dub's studio methodology - as their main creative
precursor. Certainly, Kay and Del Castillo draw
from dub's impulse to experiment with noise. The
pair previously recorded under the Soul Oddity
moniker, releasing an album and a series of
12-inch singles for the US major label Astralwerks.
Kay and Del Castillo's subsequent own avant
electronic label Schematic was reportedly initiated
after Astralwerks staff "used the word 'no' too
often" in conversations with the duo. Their Miami-
based label has issued tracks by artists such as
Otto Von Schirach and Delarosa And Asora as
well as Phoenecia remixes by electronic music
illuminati such as Richard Devine, Autechre,
Ectomorph, and Push Button Objects. Kay and
Del Castillo also notably record independently
of each other under the respective alter-egos
of Jeswa and Takeshi Muto.

Well if they play live with the frequency of Otto Von
Schirach, you can expect them to play live somewhere 3 hours
again after this performance, and then 2 hours after that in
case you miss it.

The Digital::Nimbus *LIVE* broadcast
will be 3 hrs of PHOENECIA featuring
new and unreleased material on Schematic
that i'm sure they won't be playing at the
E.L.M. event the following evening in L.A. :)

Are you connected with schematic in any way? Have you ever
seen Otto Von Schirach, or talked to him? Was he accompanied
by any smurfs of the pinhead?

Your gimmick of suspense failed to pull me in. I am otto von
schirach by the way, and I'm not playing with phonecia any
more. They're fags. I'm gonna go play with crunch, maybe
musically.. and maybe sexually. We'll see.

Schematic sucks. I'm going to start my own label called
"Ottomatic Ox", a play on the phrases "Automatic Ox" and
"Schematic Sucks", only it's not going to be a label; it's
going to be a single member (not including my robots) world
domination organization. I'm going to crash their November
26th party by the way. I'll spike the drinks with expired
mayonaise and urinate on the audience. Bah, the schematic
audience, losers that they are, would probably appreciate
that. Ottomatic Ox will dwarf schematic as well as the
entire pathetic genre of "idm". My robots can't be stopped.

start preying to your nonexistent god,
Otto Von Schirach

I hit the town and got ludicrously drunk last night, when I

started, so I missed it :(

'twas okay. a bit boring at times, but that might be due to
the time difference and that in norway the show started @
9.00 am. the music might suit the 0.00 - 3.00am hours
better.

the phoenecia guys did say cock a lot though, and that was a
bit funny, but not much.

they did a dj/live show for this digitalnimbus show, which
pietrobot always spams about. there ought to be a stream/mp3
thingie on their site some times soon, that you can check
out and judge for yourself.

my verdict is: not essential, but worth a try

small point - you misspelled one of the artists they used in
their DJ-set:

. Dick Raaismakers "Ray Makers"

his name is spelled Dick Raaijmakers - he was a Dutch
pioneer of electronic music, working at Philips in the
fifties. there was a boxed set, including his early
work, released earlier this year by the great Basta Music
(which I'm guessing this track comes from)!
