Kay... I know this isn't exactly the best place to ask this
question, but does anyone know the names of the albums that
were recorded and produced while the guy was in prison?

This guy - Varg Vikernes - is from my hometown... As far as
I can see he has done two albums in prison - Balder's Dod
and Hlidskjalf. I've never heard any of his music. Not my
cup of tea I'm afraid. The whole black metal/satanist
esthetics seem ridiculous to me. Dangerous pretentiousness.
I mean, he's in prison for murder...

yep, those are the 2 albums he made in prison

you can check it here

the Encyclopaedia Metallum is a very complete place, you can make
your collection of what titles you own, something similar to
Discogs ;)

I used to listen a lot of black metal from Norway, I'd lost
the interest on it gradually. A lot of that black metal
scene was (is) so childish at the time. Anyway, I still LOVE
lots of death and black metal from the 90's, it's something
I can look back and just smile. Hey! I still have my long
hair :D

Heh... Yeah. I am kinda researching black metal right
now...

I am prolly going to be playing a hardcore show in a couple
months, and since fast distorted beats aren't really my
thing, I thought slow steady funk with synphonic stuff and
really deafening guitars would be good.

Although all this wrath of satan stuff is pretty fun for
now. Best not to take it all too seriously, lest you kill
your best friend or something.

Black metal can be a fun listen. I started getting into it
some years ago, and I have found that there are some great
bands in that scene. At best the lyrics are quite fun to
read, and they have provided many laughs. Going to shows are
great too.

I don't really like Burzum, and i think it sounds like a
second rate demo band, although there is an ambient piece on
'Philosophem' that is bearable.

The two albums recorded in prison just sound like the prison
authorities would only let him have a cheapy keyboard, with
those hideous synthesised timpani sounds. So, yeah, not
really feeling the prison tunes. Or the neo-nazi overtones.
Or the killing your friends thing.

If you like the synphonic stuff, "Filosofem", especially the
opening track, is awesome. Epic scandinavian mountainside
stuff. "Hvis Lyset Tar Oss" is another goodie, and much more
of a consistent "Album", if you know what I mean.

is this the guy who, when the singer of his band shot his
brains out, first went out to buy a disposable camera to
photograph his dead buddy, then collected pieces of his
skull and/or brain, before contacting the police?

I have a vague recollection of this story..

Interesting thread.

Taxidermist: If you want to talk hardcore i am more than
down for that. Just create a thread dedicated to hardcore
and i will more than willingly throw around band suggestions
and DVD's that are good.

Along with torrent sites

I've been listening to Ulver a bit. Their latest stuff is
what I like most, but they can be a bit too pretentious imo.

Last year we had a case of corpse molestation here in
Norway. Some 26 year old black metal fan molested the corpse
of a 89 year old man, beheaded him and kept the head as a
trophy! Later, that same night, he went to a party and took
the head along with him to show it off!!! He was later
sentenced to two years behind bars.

qrter, the guy you are refering had the alias of "Dead"...
he was the original vocalist of Mayhem, the story
tells he always said he was to committ suicide sooner or
later... so one day he did it and now Dead was... really
dead!

I found this somewhere:

"Dead committed suicide in 1991 by shooting himself in
the mouth with a shotgun after cutting his wrists with a
machete. The bullets had been given to him by Varg
Vikerness. Varg (Count Grishnack) knew that Dead used to
practice with a shotgun in the forest close to the hut where
the guys of Mayhem lived. He detested Euronymous musical
tastes about electronic music
, needing to leave the
house to relax. His body (wearing an "I Love
Transylvania"
shirt and leaving a suicide note saying
"Excuse all the Blood") was discovered at his room.
Euronymous took some pictures (one of them appearing as the
cover of the infamous "Dawn Of The Black Hearts" bootleg
album) of the suicide and scene."

Count Grishnack (one man band... Burzum) later killed
Euronymous, original guitarist of Mayhem

nsfw gory stuff

Dead was from Sweden. my friend is friends with Pelles
('Dead') brother...

those of you interested in all this mayhem (hehe) should
read the book Lords of Chaos: The Bloody Rise of the
Satanic Metal Underground
written by Michael Moynihan &
Didrik Søderlind.
