Elephant, a Gus Van Sant film

I thought this was a sublime elegy, stripping gun violence
of romance, and showing the human impact that it has - how
people are leading normal lives which are then shot out of
them, and how it could happen to any one of us, that we are
not special or protected from it. I thought it was very
powerful and great, especially seeing people get shot!

what i really liked about this film is the way it goes about
presenting you with different teens throughout the course of
the day. I found myself assuming that "this must be the
one" or, rather, that i had preconceived notions about what
a potential murderer must be. the film sort of caught me
making prejudice generalizations about what makes a "good
kid" and a "bad kid." And it illustrates how/why people
tend to fall into cliques in high school.

I wish they had cast somebody different in the roll of the
dark haired killer boy though. he was the least convincing
actor, i thought. and unfortunately, he was one of the most
important characters in the film.

but i thought it was quite good and out of character for a
G. VanSant film.

All the actors were students from the school that this movie
was shot in. None of them were professional.

I donno if it was out of character. Most of the stuff he has
made recently has been pretty heady. Have you seen 'Gerry'?

I like how it focuses on the black kid near the end - seems
to suggest he is going to 'save the day'-- before not even
getting to confront the main killer, who turns around and
blasts him away - great piece of short-con filmsmanship.

Yeah, I thought that bit was the most 'movie' part of the
film.

I meant more like it was out of character as compared to
"Psycho" and "Good Will Hunting" and his other Hollywood
type flics. "Elephant" was the most Indy type film of his I
have seen so far. Haven't seen "gerry" but perhaps i shall.

gerry puts the art in art films.

well before *choke* Psycho and *double choke* Good Will
Hunting...Gus Van Sant was responsible for *swoon* Drugstore
Cowboy, My Own Private Idaho and To Die For

I liked the hypnotic quality of Elephant.
For a movie that was supposedly not making any judgement
calls he did take rather underhanded swipes at the Web (the
killers ordering guns online) and Video Games (the FPS one
of them was playing)....

Deduct points for those...but this is the closest to a
return to form.... not quite the Drugstore Cowboy
beater...but pretty decent nonetheless..

i kinda liked his "psycho" for what it was and was supposed
to be.

I dono if he was taking a swipe at the internet and
FPSers... it just happened that the two killers did that -
one also played Beethoven on the piano, and they shared a
shower and a kiss; are we to assume that listening or
playing to Beethoven makes you a killer? or being gay? I
think this were just to add some more depth to the
characters, not to attack FPSers or Internet Mail Order
Catalogues.

hi flea, how are ya? :D

hiya darl :)

hmmm...to me he took pains to remove Industrial Goth rock
etc from the scenario by showing them playing Beethoven...
The Gay kiss thing...well Gus is gay and in his Universe any
two boys can kiss if he wants em to ;)...that was shades of
Larry Clark goin on there...a twee bit exploitative...

As for Beethoven making you a killer..well it's not the
first the first time the Loud Def Dude's been related to
Ultraviolence...if you know wha I mean ;);)...

Well his Psycho would have been okay if a grainy old B&W
flick from the 60's had never happened...:)

I dono if the Columbine duo were homoes or not, but I
remember reading an article about some american
high-school killers who were gay, so maybe he was using that
... or maybe just because he is gay :D.

I was a big fan of Drugstore Cowboy and My Own Private Idaho
when they came out, and you're right, this is a good entry
into his canon. Did he direct Even Cowgirls Get The Blues?

Even Cowgirls Get The Blues?
yeah which was kinda...awful
To Die For... is highly recommended though...best work of
Ms. Kidman's career...based on or inspired by another true
story..brilliant disscetion of media, fame, celebrity
etc...plus David Cronenberg STARS in it!!!!

Fret no, I have seen To Die For... black comedy par
excellence... I had put off watching it for some years
because I did not really like Ms Kidman... but then I
watched Eyes Wide Shut, so I watched more of her films, To
Die For being one -- I did not realise that Van Sant
directed that film.

hmmm, is 'to die for' really that good? its only £5.99 on
play.com, i'm tempted... my favourite work of kidman so far
is 'Dogville'

I think kidman is damn tallented. Even in 'Stepford Wives'
there is a scene at the begining where her character has to
act like she's not crying and maintain this level of
intensity. Like Kidman has to act like she is acting like
she is not crying. The rest of the movie was absolute crap
though.

hate to be so negative all the time, but i really thought
drugstore cowboy was crap. those characters were garbage,
so was the plot, and all the leafy bullshit floating across
the screen was fucking lame too.

and van sant's book pink was awful, too. matter of fact,
i'd be willing to part with it cheaply if anybody wants to
buy my used (read it once, never again) copy. $5, any
takers?

some may reckon it's a bit dated now but for it's time it
was state-of-the-art, the cross cutting of all the different
styles and mediums, documentarty, reality show, news
footage, etc, etc..
