just saw the third (and last) episode of this BBC documentary series, all about the "politics of fear". it told in detail how the supposed Al-Queda-threat doesn't exist, as Al-Queada as a structured organisation doesn't exist. the filmmakers propose that this "threat" has been created by what the documentary calls the "neo-conservatives" (the Bush administration). these days politicians no longer can keep their power by providing a positive ideology but create an ideology of fear, whereby there is still a sense of Good versus Evil. overall this programme has made me say "fucking hell!" a lot and has been very, very informative. hope it gets repeated or someone rips it to torrent. |

that is exactly the point that is made at the end of this evening's programme - the whole thing is based on taking actions to prevent completely assumed problems, not waiting to find evidence first to see if the problem actually exists in the first place. and if you fall victim to these preventive actions - what can you do? how can you proove you weren't going to do something that was imagined in the first place? in the documentary they give plenty of examples of so-called "sleeper cells" - supposed terrorist cells. the presented evidence is astounding in it's non-existance. utterly astounding. (they give examples of trials like these in the US and the UK, btw.) |

the people in these "sleeper cells" were just kids, who may have done stuff that looks suspicious on first glance, but they never did anything wrong. |
