I am going to possibly invest in some new equipment soon.
Do I buy an improved pc which I know how to use, or do I buy a mac which I have heard good reviews about ?
Thanks

wizard, i asked this same question a billion times to a billion people and the majority of them told me that the mac is definetly superior to any pc with respect to it's capabilities for sound manipulation.

Definitly buy a macintosh.. [MAC] you will not be dissapointed at all. im sure you will enjoy it very much, as I did. I was thinking the same thing you are now.. wondering which to buy.. I was very glad with my choice, the Mac is superioir in MANY fields.
ps. and it looks waaaay nicer too ;]

I don't agree with you [REFLEX]. A PC is no longer a grey box. You have the option to buy whatever case you want. Check out these links for some cool cases:
http://www.megastar.se/page_produkter_codegen.htm
http://hem.fyristorg.com/aldine/chassi.htm
http://www.colorcase.com/
...and the PC is much more flexible since you can upgrade it and grow with it for years with cheap components...or real High Quality products.

Mac doesn't have very much support,.. and besides everything nowadays is made for normal pc's,... and the stuff on the mac usually comes out on pc first too,... most people who are really into "doing stuff" on computers prefer pc's,... people who are a little more sensible and take computing as a form of entertainment might like the mac's more,... but personally I prefer to have a world of resources by my hand,.. hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahha,.. em,, sorry

i ain't no expert or anything, but i was under the impression that the mac was a specialist computer, implying that it is special and for use by professionals with a specific task in hand ie graphics and sound stuff.
the pc, i thought, was your all round computer that was more "general" than specific.
i think that alot of people are put off by macs because you can't always get mac stuff down your local highstreet, and you end up having to go through stress and alot of waiting before you get your hands on the desired goods.

both music software and hardware are more expensive on the mac, i have heard they are less problematic, but if you know abit about computers (I assume you do) then a pc is a much cheaper alternative.

A PC is not for harder things to do. The MAC is. I do graphic design with various large programs and they run smoother, more reliable and faster on my G4 than on a PENTIUM 4. PC released the Pentium 4 because MAC released the 733 G4 first. Which enraged them at PC. Because when you convert the power to PC hertz you have something that is more powerful than the Pentium4. Just because things are easier to find for PC does that mean you must buy it anyway?
go here nice looking fast coputer

i have played with both mac and pc for years on each. i can say that i really liked mac's digital performer but i hated how often that damn machine crashed. now i am a slave to sf Acid and soundforge as well as a pile of freeware soft synths and drum machines which was not available to me on mac.
so i guess i like pc much better now. plus all the good video games come out on pc first. werd. ska

You can try and look for it on the 'net. There are ones for older windows apps, such as Windows 3.1, But you can also [if you look really hard] find ones that will do awsome and play any PC games, or do any PC applications.. or you can just buy one and it will run just like a PC!

From what i've read, most on the rephlex lable use Macs(laptops)ie-cylob,ovuca. kid 606 uses a mac. Aphex, i think uses a mac. If thats the sound you want to go for. Bogdan uses a pc laptop, i think.
I recently got an "open item" compac pc from a major retailer. It was under 850$, the specs are
933 mhz Pen III pro, 60 gig hard drive, 128 dram, Cd rom/cdr/rw Windows Me(doesn't crash) plus i added an audiowerk sound card digital i/o analouge i/o - with the program "Logic Audio".
Altogether under 1050$, So you just have to look around for whats best, you can find a really good open item for cheap at most retail stores. It works really fast and can handle lots of programs at once. Perfect for goofing around or actually putting together some quality stuff.
Really all you need is a program you can feel comfortable with though, then just get some upgrades as time goes on.

I think i'm getting a new mac too. I have a 17" intel imac atm...i think i'm gonna sell it and get a new 20" aluminum imac. I was gonna just upgrade the one i have but worked out it'd cost more than just selling this one and buying a new one.

I think PCs can do a lot more for you, ONLY if you know what you're doing, and are really good at computer-ing.

i have a quad p4 running at 12.9 ghz (1080mhz dd2 5 5 4 10 latency.)
spent Only about £375 kept my crt monitor case mouse keyboard build it overclocked it.
tis very quick on multi processor support progs or running multiple vst instruments ect ect
very quick. for the price
( over clocking is a bitch to begin with but i learnt it in a week or two.) worth the effort no doubt at all.

...on water however some people using a q6600 are running cool at 15 ghz+ (3.8 x4 +) 2000 fsb
not sure how the newer quads are running ..quicker still i'm sure.

the secret to a stable system is to tune the bios.
using programs like prime 95 and temperature monitoring software such as coretemp
when you put load a computer 100 percent cpu usage ....the frequencies of the ram fsb cpu north/south bridge voltages need to be in tune with each other ....or you get problems crashes windows not shuting down an stuff.
tuning doesn't fix all the problems OS/sofware but it helps to have a balanced electrical system. and overclocking is great if you can keep your board, cpu cool.
