as some of you may know im making my online portfolio.
right after graduating i thought it will be the best way to
show my uni works i did by last 5 years, instead of sending
them in various shitty copies along with my CV.
therefore as i specialize in concrete constructions in civil
engineering, i want to show projects i did - something about
15 projects . portfolio will include also CAD pictures i did
in a JPEG format, and short description for each project
i've made.

but...

some time ago i thought that portfolio is a way to show
yourself, skills, etc, so... i thought that maybe, MAYBE.,
on a main page ibesides "contsct" "my Uni works" "info" i
should add "music works" link to show music im also creating
? just a bunch of vbest tracks.

i wanna ask about this music link, coz im not sure...
so what'ya think ? should i do both music and uni works in
one portfolio, or should i do one uni portfolio and separate
website with music ?

I'm an architect stuent in my fourth year so we're kinda in
the same field. From working i practice some people are open
to msuic, others not, so its a pretty subjective subject. It
may scare some old 60 year old partner engineer
off.....where as other maybe impressed by your diverse
selection of skills.

But CAD drawings to JPEGs isn't the best way, export them to
Illustrator or a vector program, this way the draings will
stay vectorised and if you know how to do cool things in
flash you could still leave all of the details of your
drawings very readable

ah, b ut i know only how to set up JPEG format, besides i
dont have illustrator ? whats the difference ? after making
them JPEG i can add nice texture in backgropund to make them
more...hmm, warm, and then put them on site.

how to vectorize them ?

CAD is a vector program so it use maths to figure out where
the line starts and ends, where a jpeg figures out what
pixels to colour in. Vector drawings are usually a lot
smaller in size and and are infintily zoomable without
effecting the quality, where as a jpeg will pixelate when
making it too big or zooming in.

You could still add textures in illustrator, and i think
coreldraw does vector stuff too. A jpeg is ok, but if you
want the drawing to be as readable as possible go for a
vector format. Jpegs are fine, but not really meant for
line drawings, just photos

ok, but how should i save them as vector images ? iJEPG is
made simply by adding ploter scheme and then setting up wiev
that should be saved, and then you print the pic to a file
and voila ! what formats whold i use to make'em better (
as you said ) ?

What CAD program are you using?

If your drawings aren't too detailed I guess jpegs will do,
the best way is to save them as a jpeg and see what it looks
like at your desire pixel size. e.g. are your pcitures all
going to be 450x450 pixels ? If it reads well enoguh then
don't worry about vector drawings.

You can also set up a postscript level 2 plotter to plot EPS
files - If you plot them to A0 and and open in photoshop at
200dpi it sometimes produces nice line drawings, but
experiment and see what porduces the ebst results. If JPEGs
are good enough for you then there is no point learning how
to do vector drawings as it can become a little more
complictaed

Illustrator opens dwgs and dxfs, you'll need flash or
director (macromedia) to publish vector drawings, (there
maybe others). Flash also opens dxfs straight into flash. So
if you can save a flash movie (*.swf) and you can put swfs
into html sites easily. You could also animate it or modify
it in flash/illustrator.

yeah i checked jpeg pics in various combinations before,
even when they are about 1024x768, with some old paper
texture added they look cool - enough details to look fine
and enought to avoid little flaws that jpeg is making :) so
i think i will stay at jpeg, plus i can modify its size,
which is good.

thanks :)

If I had a portfolio, I would post them with my music to
underline my creativity

If someone's going to there to look at your architecture
they might not even check out your tracks, but they might
like just seeing that you're into other creative things like
making music. On the other hand, if they do listen to your
tracks and get assaulted by insane glitch-tacular drill and
bass ragga-rapecore, they might be scared off.

Most normal companies only care about how you can make them
money, so unless they're looking to hire you for some kind
of strange Musical Civil Engineer position, I'd leave the
music part out. It's just more professional that way.
Portfolios are best when when they're short and show the
company exactly what their looking for, and no more.
