To be fair, what they meant is that that sort of thing doesn't fit their ideals of what America should be like... blah blah blah beacon of democracy and freedom and hope and puppies. Not that this makes it any less annoying that that disconcertingly widespread sort of person seems to believe these are exclusively/originally/whateverly American concepts; or that in their eyes, saying "oh no!" and vaguely punishing some of those at the very bottom of the ladder in these cases seems to be enough, and that there seems to be so little interest in the evidence that these guards didn't just do all that simply because they were bored, or, whether they did or not, in finding out what about the atmosphere there and/or in the army in general drove them to it. |
