so, i have this school assignment for which i have to think about what i'd send to another galaxy, as they did years ago with the nasa voyager.
i have to pick 10 objects, and 10 pieces of music. Naturally, i cannot pick music that represents the planet earth. Nobody can, except for NASA, or at least they would like to think they can.
So here's my personal top 10, which is of course a bit of a weird one, but you all know that there is no such thing as a definite top 10. The aphex twin track was perhaps the hardest. I feel like meltphace 6 represents enough of his drill style, as well as some more ambient sounds, but still, i just had to pick one.
i'm burning this cd for my teacher. Not to get a good grade or anything, cause we dont get grades for this assignment, but because i know he'll appreciate it.
if you like, gimme your top 10, or comment on this one. tell me which tracks you hate with a passion, or which one you might like to hear at your funeral.

to say that what you are doing is a sysaphean task is to imply that sisyphus was a slacker.
The universe is so unbelieveably huge, that to believe that any music you might send out, to any extra-terrestial being, in any manner that might be received and appreciated in any significant way, is utter and complete pretension.
A top ten that would be representative of earth would have to span more than 10 years and I'd hope that it would include at least a little jazz.

its funny how internet always goes dead just when you hit 'reply' and deletes your message.
it came down to this:
read my thread again, because you are full of shit and missed the point completely. try 'imagination' sometime.
and fuck jazz. and fuck a span of 10 years of music. are you kidding me?

not putting in any aphex track would feel very wrong though.

you said this was a personal top ten right? not earth's top ten? so whats the big deal? its music you like. if it were the "top ten songs representing all earth has to offer" than i think it would need classical works and might not include any aphex or even electronic music for that matter, but if its just your top ten, sounds fine.

i never pretended this to be a big deal.
there is no such thing as representing the earth with a top 10 of songs, or even a top 1 billion. boards of canada would represent as much as the beatles.
the last track sounds classical enough to me. maybe you should listen to it?

i wasn't really addressing you. godataloss was saying you were being "pretentious" and that your selections were all wrong, so i was trying to point out that your selections were probably supposed to be personal, not representative of some worldwide consensus of great music.
about the classical, if it were "the best the earth has to offer", i honestly think atleast seven of the tracks would be classical. but thats just me.
