Wow. I don't often get bothered by the deaths of ''celebrities'', but this one is tough to take. Yeah, he was a really good guy, and was actually making slight progress towards walking again. He actually managed a small amount of muscle movement in his legs a while back. Damn shame.

A sad shame, as Bogola says, he was so positive that it makes this sorry end that much sorrier. As well as Superman I really liked him in "Somewhere in Time" with Jane Seymour. Marlon Brando.. Christopher Reeve... I'd be worried if I were Gene Hackman.

what what what? The guy _only_ became interested in science once his life started to depend on it! That makes him selfish, not some idealist humanitarian. Point to me all the science he helped before he got fucking nailed.

Then we'd better disregard a LOT of good work by a lot of good humanitarians. Celebrities have limited funds, unbelievably enough, and throwing millions at a randomly chosen few of the ten billion problems we have around the world isn't something everbody is prepared to do... until they feel the effects of what people are going through. That's only human.
And the chances of him ever walking again were slim to nothing... he held out hope and put up a fight, but come on, realistically, he knew he was going to die paralyzed. This wasn't all for him. His fate was his calling.
