Do you have record that skips? Now, with the help of a pen
or a blunt object made of plastic, you can repair it and
enjoy further hours of listening experience!

To do it you will have to identify the place where the
record skips, put the record on it's inner sleeve on a
table. Gently rub the blunt end of the pen (not the writing
part...) over the damage area both with the direction of the
groove and across.
Then play the record to determine if you have had any
success in repairing, if not repeat the procedure once
more.

I have had a successrate of about 80% with this method. The
remaining 20% have been on severly damaged records.

Note: I do not take any responsibility for further damage to
your records.

toothpaste can be used to repair scratched cds (not the gel
kind)

all you do is put a thin layer over the area affected wait
for it to dry and rub away with a clean cloth

Really? Does it matter how deep the scratch? And why does
this work?

any other tips? This thread is turning out to be awesome!

Both outstanding tips.

My tip:

If you want to clean your microwave put half a lemon inside
and turn it on for 30 seconds. Then it's a lot easier to
wipe the mess off.

Thanks aggie and kim.

Another one: Removing pricetags without damaging the cover.

This concerns pricetags which seem superglued to a shiny
(varnished) record sleeves/digipaks. For this you need a
soft cloth and a bottle of Isopropanol (can be bought at
local hardware store or paint shop).
First you need to pour some liquid onto the cloth. Then use
the cloth to soak the pricetag. Do this until it appears to
be saturated with Isopropanol. Wait 1/2 minute to let the
glue dissolve, then gently remove the pricetag. If there is
any excess glue on the cover, use the isopropanol-damp cloth
to rub it away.

yes it does.
CaOH + CH3COOH ->
(CH3COO-) + (H30+) + CaOH ->
(CH3COO-) + (Ca+) + H2O

or something like that.

sorry, that was elusivian.

it only works to clean your tap if theres the white stuff
(calcium thingey) clogging the pipes.

Yes there is. Track 4.

It's the best all-purpose cleaner i've come across. I use
for everything from cleaning my styluses to clean up dirty
2ndhand 12".

i use it too for a lot of stuff, i buy it in 5 liter
jerrycans at a hardware store, only its the kind with gel
added.. convenient :)

on AB1 it is called Isopropophlex and is 5:20 long. The
Classics version is slightly longer (6:23), and is called
Isopropanol. It's the same song though.

If the outflowing air from your vacuumcleaner smells really
bad, add a spoonful or two of washing powder to the
dustbag.

... over the damage area both with the direction of the

groove and across.

okay, I wanna make sure I understand this better, can you
provide a more detailed explanation on this part or maybe
post a really crap mspaint picture to demonstrate. I'm
afraid I'll do it wrong and cause more damage.

The key point is to do it gently, you don't want to destroy
the original groove, just even out the scuff that makes it
skip. There is always a danger of making things worse. For
example, one record I tried fixing ended up with a loss in
sound quality, but I was pretty rough with my repairs and
didn't manage to fix it.

I hope my shitty picture gives a better demonstration of the
process

put a heavy object on the top glass and leave it out in the
sun

todays success: i had a listen to cylobian sunset and
discovered that diof skipped very badly. i used my method
and after 4 or 5 iterations (indeed a tough one to repair)
it was listenable again.

if i had the forsight i would make some mpfrees to
demonstrate the result inna before and after stylee. maybe
next time.

what kind of pen do you use?

is the blunt side kinda rounded, or is it flat?

are we talking about using the top end of the pen ie, the
other side from where the ink thingy is??!?!? or like at an
angle so that only the side of the ink thingy touches the
groove...

also, about flattening wax, i hope this works, i just found
a crate fulll of some older house records in my parents
garage... about two summers worth of storage,,,,,,,,,,,,,
warp'd records.

do not use the writing part to do this. the idea is to have
a material with the same softness as the wax. ie: no metal.
as for the pen, any will do. i use a Pilot rollerball pen

putting a warped record between 2 pieces of glass and
placing it the sun didn't produce very good results when i
tried some years back (it was only for a couple of minutes
and the day was very hot). It straightened the record but
also squshed the groves producing large amounts static and
lots of pink noise on play back. So be careful when trying
this method, it definitely needs refining.

I will try the blunt pen trick when i get home tonight on my
gescom 'this' 12" which has a skip in it . Thanks for the
tip!
