There should be more available. There are some awesome
films out there that I never hear about and you foreign
bastards should tell me more about them.

Recent films I have watched.

Hana Bi
La Haine

both excellent.

heres one: "Switchblade Romance" - if Gaspar Noé had done a
horror film, it even has the butcher from I Stand Alone in
it

I grabbed a strange old Japanese movie off suprnova.org the
other day (well, week), Onibaba, it's in the horror section.
Very weird ambience to this one, I'd make a point to hunt it
down if I didn't already have it. It has one of my favorite
masks ever in it.

And I watched Ichii the Killer the other day. Gooey.

I used to have Onibaba on video, excellent film , with the
rushes blowing in the wind, the big hole, the mask...very
spooky, very good.

Channel 4 in the 80s and early 90s used to show brilliant
foreign films. Fuck knows what they put on now.

Historias Minimas (Minimal Stories)
Dir Carlos Sorin Arg 2002

1hr 31m Subtitled
Javier Lombordo, Antonio Benedictti, Javiera Bravo, Francis
Sandoval

Using mainly non-professional actors, this charming
Argentinian road movie interweaves three tales of people
seeking their dreams amidst the epic landscape of Patagonia.
Old Don Justo’s eyesight is failing, but he’s still
determined to hitch to a distant town where his missing dog
Badface has been spotted. Roberto is a travelling salesman
hoping to impress a young widow with a birthday cake for her
kid. Impoverished Maria travels towards a game show taping
and her dream prize.

Saw it at the cornerhouse in manchester a few months back...
excellent film. Highly recommended.

so long as we're talking about japan:

Tokyo Drifer
Branded to Kill
the Pornographers
Woman in the Dunes
Black Rain (very, very sad and disturbing, but very well
made also)

a few french'uns:

Shoot the Piano Player
Pierrot Le Fou
La Jetee
Le Samourai
Last Year In Marienbad <--strictly for those who enjoy
cerebral, visual, pretentious films that don't really go
anywhere... ;)

elsewhere:
Aguirre, the Wrath of God (german)
Kanal (polish)
Element of Crime (danish... but in english)
Stalker (Russia)
Taste of Cherry (Iranian)

just a few favourites of mine that might interest people...
please don't take my word for it though because i have weird
taste in movies... read up on them first...

Great thread.

It would be even greater if people described the movies a
bit and not just name dropped.

Have you seen this one ?
One of the best movies ive seen.

amazing how I used to think hollywood was the only place
that made good movies, now i've came to realise they
actually make some of the worst.
