I want to try and make a few tracks... what does everyone
use? I've been meaning to try and put a few things together
based on samples etc.

Find out yourself. My recommendation in never accept anyone
elses recommendations...find stuff that makes interesting
noises and fit them together the way you want them to sound.

I need some recommendations in order to find out for myself.
Thanks for the effort though.

with all the music software you need.

Cool Edit Pro and Soundforge are for editing and altering
.wav and various other sound files.

You might want to look into Reason, Recycle, Acid Pro among
some. There are various free programs if you search good
enough.

Beginers tip.
When learning a new program go thru a few tutorials (boring)
or open some demo songs and watch how they have done.
Or (the best way) sit for hours and fuck around with it ,
there is not like anything will explode if you press the
wrong button (unless you use tobybear plugs hehe!) .

Try www.hitsquad.com/smm
or
micromusic.com --> under "Microwarez" tab, past the crappy
15 min trial link...
8-bitters take note of the latter site.

Some good sample-based trackers are Renoise, Modplug Tracker
and Buzz.
