im searching the board the old fashioned way, like my
grandfather taught me, by "browse members" finding the
member who i think might have made a post and reviewing
their last 25 posts till i find it

if you guys need help with the coding, i'm sure there's
plenty here that can give a hand. php/mysql skills are
pretty common these days.

I keep seing the word "vagina" in this post... however, on
closer inspection, the word is never vagina. Therefore, I've
decided to add the word vagina to this post.

As follows:

Vagina.

the problem is not coming from programming abilities or
disabilities, it is coming from the so-called "full-text"
index... We have more than 1 million messages some with a
few words some with a lot of words. Mysql has to create an
index from all these, and keep it updated... And when
someone is searching for "aphex twin", the enormous number
of hits will kill the database engine...
i was thinking about building my own indexing engine, which
would be tailored to our needs, but at this time i am really
busy (changed to an international company), so it will not
happen very soon... Sorry, use Google.

Attachment (max. 200 kbytes, max.width: 400 px, max.height:
1000 px)

for google-search, just add "site:xltronic.com" after the
search.

man this is getting annoying, could you not "disable"
certain "big" words like "aphex" and the such? at least for
now? :)

why not delete old threads?

or move them to an unsearchable area

Points: 35867 Status: Lurker | Followup to nacmat: #01366230 | Show recordbag

erhm... wouldn't that defeat the point of searching for old
threads? if the old threads were unsearchable?

offline nacmat on 2004-10-19 02:53 [#01366441]
Points: 31271 Status: Lurker | Followup to Drunken Mastah: #01366430

I mean, to keep threads from the last two years... and move
the precious to a place where you can browse them but not
use the search in them

or better:

diferent forums with independent search funnctions in each.

so forum 1:(only to browse or search, but not post)
threads previous to 2002

forum 2: (only to browse or search, but not post)
threads from 2002-2003

forum 3: (actual forum, where people can post)
threads from 2003

and in the case you want to discuss a thread from a old
forum you start a thread in the actual forum and link to the
old thread

this way the search function would have to work for a lot
less threads cos each froum has its own search

off," as nacmat said, but then, when he was testing it, it
locked up again...
