I'm reading a book on this.. one i found at a 2nd hand
bookshop and the kind o've always wanted as a kid. A
Chronological Atlas of WWII. It shows the signifiicent
events in maps month by month and how simultaneous events
affected each other.

Jesus i'm learning a lot. Didn't know Russia invaded Finland
at the start, secrelty backed by Germany. Didn't realise how
quickly France fell. Didn't know Japans foothold in China
was so massive. Didn't know Italy had such power in Africa

Absoultely facinating. Imagine the internet was around back
then!

We live in a weird information age now, and this bookis
putting it into perspective for me in an odd way. What a
crazy world we live in.

Wikipedia is good for wars. Re-learning all the shit I've
forgotten since school thanks to that old chestnut.

Hitler/Franco/Musollin and Stalin were some fruitcakes, eh?

Unreal how they got there all the same.....un fucking
unbelievable.

You'd almost prefer their upfront militiristic agenda than
Bush or Bin Laden's sneaky wankery.

Stalin must've been the über-insane-motherfucker out of
those four.

that guy just continued what he had been doing for years and
years and years when WWII came round.

The World Wars are savagely beautiful things, so ugly. I'll
never pass up a WW1 or WW2 documentary on the History
Channel, or A&E, believe you me.

There was an article in the paper here the other day about
Nova Scotia fighter pilot aces. The top fighter pilots, the
cream of the crop, often racked up about 30 kills (downed
planes) and about 40 damaged planes. That's insane... these
guys must have sold their souls to the Devil before hopping
into the cockpit. No matter how good you are, how sharp your
instincts or elite your training, you'd think it would be
nigh impossible to be such a fucking juggernaut up there (or
in war in general). Luck plays such a factor in war... you
could be Rambo, and some mistimed mortar could explode you,
errant shrapnel could shred you, or you could be one of the
unlucky bastards on a blown up boat not even AT the battle
yet, dead but no fault of your own. And some of these ''Red
Barons'' fucked up the shit of nearly 100 enemy pilots
without nary a scratch.

i find the logistics of wars amazing.. all the behind the
scenes shit like how to get supplies to the front, securing
fuel/food etc. "Private Ryan" was such great little movie
for showing the chaos and bloodyness of it all.

Been reading how the Finns kickd soviet ass back in 1939/40
under overwhelming firepower cos they knew how to fight in
the snowy moutains with simple weapons and tactics. The
battle for Norway was damn interesting too.... how the brits
and germans reached the same conclusions about Norways
tactical importance and more or less arrived there at the
same time to battle it out.

Two books you should definitely read about significant
points (on the Eastern Front) and military tactics in World
War II are Antony Beevor's STALINGRAD, and BERLIN: THE
DOWNFALL 1945.

Italy didn't really have that much 'power' in Africa. They
exerted a militaristic influence to begin with but their
armed forces where always bested by Allied troops. The
Germans had to bale them out every time. My Grandfather was
stationed in Egypt.

You would probably be interested in the Irish attitude
during the war. I've read somewhere about a PoW camp in
Ireland that incarcerated both British and Axis prisoners.

The Finns certainly didn't 'kick soviet ass' in 1942.
