for pseudo medieval/renaissance music: "Mediaeval Baebes"
it's a bit cheesy sometimes but lots of fun to listen to.

for exotic music: "Huun Huur Tu and the Bulgarian Womens
Choir Angelite" - "Fly, Fly My Sadness" it's totally
stunning in places

these don't really have the same kind of sound but it's made
with a similar attitude

i cant really say i listen to a group that sounds like this,
you mentioned gybe, but have you looked into the 3 silver mt
zion releases? there not as "grand" as godspeed but their
tracks are just as epic. definetly check out explosions in
the sky.

i didn't listen, but the mp3 is labeled as a track by a duo
called dead can dance. this track is from an album called
"within the realm of a dying sun," and their other records
with a similar style include "spleen and ideal," "the
serpent's egg," and "aion." all were released on 4ad and
subsequently rereleased on 4ad/warner brothers in the us.
their first self titled album is more guitar driven and
post-punk rock styled, and their records after "aion" added
more keyboards and "world music" flavors. they are no
longer recording together. the female singer is lisa
gerrard.

also, look into the first volume of music by les mystere des
voix bulgares (spelling might be slightly off), a bulgarian
women's choir with very striking contrasts and memorable
melodies. released on 4ad in the uk, and nonesuch in the
us.
