[games] doom/hexen/heretic

we've talked about this sort of thing a few times..

anyway I finally tried out doomsday to play my hexen
expansion and some doom2 wads and it was nicer than doom
legacy (and zdoom sucks on linux so..). Specifcally it's
better optimized so the lights look better, it has a
particle engine so that things splatter more nastily..
rockets leave lingering smoke, there's some glow effects on
projectile collisions, and textures are mipmapped so they
look much smoother at a distance than with zdoom (which just
does bilinear/trilinear/whatever(anisotropic etc)
filtering).

yeah

im now playing medal of honor, which isnt too cool i think.
but what drives me insane is the lack of light at times. i
shouldve gotten a cheat for that but im almost done already

man haven't you heard of screenshots??!
lol

yeah the source ports are great, i haven't tried jDOOM yet,
but i have got ZDOOM on my PC and DOOM Legacy on my Mac
(because Legacy is the only source port that is made for OS
X also)

at the moment i prefer ZDOOM, because it's ULTRA smooth on
my system - i'm getting something ridiculous like 220fps
running under my 6800 GT 256MB card!

It only labels a win32 source package, but that's what I
downloaded and compiled on linux. It uses SDL/openGL for
gfx and other parts of SDL for a few other things, so it
should be rather system agnostic.

Actually I just looked, they have a page up about it:

oscillik buddy, i'd be bloody concerned if your system
wasn't running doom smoothly :-p

They have support for 3D models:

though for most monsters the 2D sprites look nicer.
cyberdemon, for instance, is shitty.

Cool, never heard of that one. I'll stick with zdoom because
my computer is a fraaaagile ecosystem. Removing zdoom will
be like removing an entire species lower down in the food
chain, having disasterous unpredictable dominoe effects.

you don't have to remove ZDOOM to be able to play DOOM using
another source port - just copy the .wad file to the same
directory as the source port, and it will run fine

correction #2: he knew that, it was a joke, same reason you
missed my comment.

yeah it's pretty sweet.

w M w: zdoom is better for older systems; this thing really
wants a newer machine.. I didn't know that at first

the mipmapping is not so great actually, but the fucking
rocket trails and ability to play hexen (I fucking love
hexen) is key.

it plays heretic maps as well

id software stated they would like to remake the old games
with the new technology.

Hopefully, we'll see some Hexen/Heretic (the cross-bow
owned) soon!

i thought their next project would be a totally new game (as
in, not a sequel to the others)

It will be.

But, the company can work on multiple project at the same
time. They said they would like to take a little time here
and there and rebuild some of the older games using the new
technology.

I would love that :)
