surely you must have read more than 5...i mean it was obligatory in school wasn't it?
i don't have troubles with concentrating if the book is interesting...if it isn't my thoughts keep getting away.

same thing, i have 4 or 5 books near my bed, and i just don't read them - i just never really feel like reading them, and when i do i read like 15-20 pages then stop...
sometimes i can see a sentence and not really read it but "rest" over it and think of something else, i stay on a sentence (or paragraph or page...) for 15 minutes without going forward o_O and i only notice i'm doing this when it stops, i'm not even doing it on purpose - talk about concentration...
i'm quite ashamed of it, i know i'm missing out a lot. i wonder if i should force myself or just admit that it isn't my thing - probably force myself.

yeah, didn't improve my reading speed though apparently. or maybe it improved the *reading* itself, just deciphering the characters, but not the comprehension speed - i can read a text fast but i have to read it slower or several times to understand it sometimes especially when it's in a foreign language.

I also have problems reading books. I don't have an interest or a desire problem... but when I actually get to the act of reading, my eyes skip around pages, I skip whole paragraphs, and then regret it 10 seconds later and go back which understandably fucking up my flow, my mind wanders after every other line... it's difficult. But once I get a good distance into the book, usually I'm engrossed enough to overcome my ADD-like-symptoms, and I can read speedily and efficiently.
I like coffee table books... GLOSSY AND SAUCY.

a friend of mine speed reads; he just turns pages, it doesn't look like he's reading. He learned how to read that way from the beginning, he also learned really young like when he was 3 or 4. I on the other hand do still have a little trouble concentrating, though that couldd be because I just finished the "silmarilion" (try that one out..jeesh). I also had some learning disabilities when i was younger i.e. (id est) I read backwards and around and stuff.

It's not strange at all--we're all used to blippy computers, over dramatic films, over exaggerated television and beeping cell phones--hell we even need mechanical reminders to cook properly. Books require you to sit down and use your fucking imagination; contents are set for you sure, but your brain takes it up many notches, so it's nothing like the spoon feeding regular life has turned into. I repeat: books are good at combatting this.

yeah i cant concentrate on novels/fiction. i'll be reading down the page, then start thinking about something else, while actually still reading the words in the book, then i get to the end of the page and realise i wasn't paying attention to what i was reading and have no idea what happend in the book, then i have to start the page again.
if i'm reading something informative i usually dont have a problem however. i just can't enjoy a story in book form, maybe if i was a faster reader it would work better.
