I hate to admit partaking, but rachmaninoff's second
symphony fits the bill if you're looking for that sort of
thing

every minority has an active bit of pretense

(you may say that majorities are worse, but many minorities
have a rabid sort of aggressive unity)

rachmaninov isn't classical, it's post-romantic

speaking of rachmaninov though,

piano sonata no. 2 in b flat minor,
played by vladimir horowitz

I highly highly recommend it, rachmaninov said this is the
way it should be played. I have it on slsk if anyone wants
it, screenname 'mappatazee' or I'm in the aphextwin.nu room.

he's actually a pretty straight romantic, even though he
came late--his harmony is pretty straightforward
chromaticism. Listen to strauss for real late romantic.

I love that piece, but I saw a video of him playing it and
thought it was terrible..

I haven't known the piece well for long, and hence don't
have a recording I'm very fond of. there is a decent video
on-line:

this second video of her is more impressive:
