Listen to his new, not-as-good-as-it-used-to-be ''Smile'' In streaming form, only takes a second to sign up. Or just download it somewhere.
My initial reaction upon hearing his new ''Heroes and Villians'' a couple of weeks ago was... surprise. As in, ''I'm surprised Brian is collaborating with OZZY OSBOURNE of all people! Wacky''. But no, that's just Brian's 62 year old vocal chords struggling with material that was written for a younger, more vital voice.
The backing tracks are completely re-recorded with his 2004 band... and they're done faithfully. At times, it sounds like they've just cleaned up the original tapes. Very familiar. Percussion, horn sections, pianos, they all sound pretty much like they always have, albeit a lot cleaner. Good job on that part. I've really got no complaints... I was worried they'd fuck about with the arrangements, make them more modern... but no, they're solid.
But I can not enjoy his ''new voice'' in this context... he can still hold his own in concert, and with new material, but still, he's just a shadow of his former self, and I'm so used to hearing the nearly four decade old takes with his beautiful young voice... not this one. I also don't like the backing vocals as much as the original Beach Boys', they lack the same punch. Maybe somebody else will appreciate the, er, extra grit in the vocals, but I can't. It's still got soul... but at one point, it had soul AND beauty to burn.
What do you think? ''Wonderful'' was (still is) two of my favorite minutes in the history of recorded sound, incomplete or not...

not happy. ages ago ever since he said he was going to release smile i'd been really looking forward to it smiley smile being my favourite beach boys album. then about 2 months ago he then decided to tell the world that he's decided to re-record the whole thing. what a bastard!
if you wanna hear fucked up, listen to "still i dream of it", a demo he recorded circa 1974 that he decided in his infinite wisdom to put on a solo album. can't remember the name of it but it's very short and it also has a couple of re-recorded tracks, one being do it again which surprisingly sounds pretty good.

Brian Wilson?? BRIAN WILSON!!!! I was named after that fuck. Sad. That day in somber, brisk 1978 when all my dad could think of was an artist's name on the radio @ the hospital.

the album is "i just wasn't made for these times" from 1995.
another great track from another solo album from 1988 is the last track "meet me in my dreams tonight" a standout track from an average album.

He just wasn't made for these times. I listened to his latest solo album a while ago, and it was merely OK. I haven't heard much of his previous solo efforts, just a track here or there. I know I have nearly everything on a data CD somewhere.
I was just looking at the track listing for ''I Just Wasn't Made for these Times''... looks pretty interesting. I think the original Caroline No is a superhuman vocal performance, I want to hear that other version now.
I haven't heard the 2004 ''Surf's Up'' yet... the website won't let me for some reason, and I haven't dug it up anywhere else... can anybody tell me what it's like?

"he just wasn't made for these times". you can say that again. too bad really, as sunflower and smiley smile are two of my favorite albums ever.
as for the 2004 surfs up, i haven't heard that, although i'd like to. i always felt that was a weak album on its own and works better doubled up with sunflower, because its got some really dated social/economic commentary on it that sort of weighs down some of the cooler guitar and vocal effects and relatively strong songs on the album.

The ''album'' was always very flawed, but the best stuff on it was masterful. And the old coot had to go and spoil those shining moments with his slurred croak.
Sunflower is superb. Great, straightforward songwriting... but I really wish he'd kept on going completely apeshit with the kooky ideas. They date, but that's just a fact of life, time is irrelevent. Most of the music I'm listening to now are going to date, and badly, doesn't mean a thing.
Wild Honey, Surf's Up... lots of great albums that somehow get totally overlooked. I guess too many people associate them with Full House and Kokomo... or if they're slightly more curious, often they're still not willing to dig deeper than Pet Sounds.

He was on his official messageboard a few days ago, and got in a little fight with someone there that dissed the new Smile. He's nothing if not passionate.
His voice still prevents me from really enjoying this... he did do a great job with the arranging and updating of the old material, but that one little aesthetic hangup is too much for me to take. I've got my own personal Smile mix that makes me happy.

No, I've heard the original material in many many different forms, I've got a good understanding of the material and the history of it, and I've given the new one enough run throughs to get used to it and settle in. It's still a fine album and they did a good job, it deserves accolades, but it's not for me. I've never said he outright ruined it or anything, or it's not a good effort. I don't like his voice and there's many many instances here where I prefer some of the older renditions. It's not ''missing out'', it's having a differing opinion than Brian (who says this is a 10 album an Pet Sounds is a 7) or Rolling Stone or Pitchfork. If I'm going to be swayed, somebody from Pitchfork is not going to be the person to do it. :-p

after hearing this, i'm going to agree with you on that. i really prefer his voice from decades ago over what its become now. this is a good album, but thats all it is to me.

Most of the reviews have been pretty unanimous.. all very positive and I tend to agree.. Of course Brian's voice isn't as good as it was when he was 24- he's done enough drugs and smoked enough herbal extracts of all varieties over the years to see to that. The fact he can sing at all right now is something. All that said, this Smile is quite an accomplishment and the only thing I don't like as much about it are the leads by Brian- but I think I can live with that....but he sounds better than for a while, especially his croaky 70's voice.
In my opinion all the instrumental tracks are as good or surpass the originals and all the complicated backing vocals are on a par with the originals. The 'finished' songs sound amazing and makes you wonder how things would have turned out had he finished the old 60's version.
