Ok so I'm starting to get more into the details of music.
Can anyone offer up some good websites or books on music
theory?

Anyone have personal experience and developements that came
from reading such material?

Cool, thanks/

as far as online i don't think you would find much. i don't
know of any certain book companies, but i would try your
local community college book store or possibly a university
book store if you can.

Cool, yeah I live near Berklee College of Music, but I
thought I'd ask for any personal solutions here, before I
ventured into the city of Boston and dodging the many (pot)
holes on my way.

i'm just saying because the books i've used in school for
music theory have been very good.

it's been a bit since i took the classes so i don't know if
i'd be of much help :)

I don't really like how they call it "theory". What they
teach is more of a convention than a theory. It has yet to
be proven as fact? "music theory" is just a meme that caught
on.

i am experimenting with a side parting at the moment for the
first time since i was a kid. it's going ok so far.

olga is a (very good) guitar tablature site, but
it also has links to some music-theory lessons that are
applicable to all instruments.

some good stuff to learn (in order); i'm assuming you're
totally ignorant on this stuff here:

the 12-tone system and the way the notes are laid out on a
piano or keyboard,
scales (four good ones to learn to begin with: major, minor,
pentatonic and diminished)
the cycle of fifths
chord construction
time sigs (3/4, 4/4, 7/4)
modes
polyrhythms

then again... i know lots about this stuff, but my music is
still shit. so it's not the most important thing in the
world, imo.
