Motherfuckers always make new editions. Why? So you
can't buy the same exact thing used for 1/2 price. And gee
wiz, since I have so much say so in which books I get, I'll
go ahead and choose hard covers for all of them since I like
paying 30 dollars extra for each. Thank you.

When I did my degree I read the entire reading list before I
started, thinking that is what I had to do. When I went to
my first lecture, it dawned on me that they were just
regurgitating the stuff I had read. I spoke to my Tutor and
he got me to write the end of year essay there and then and
I did the whole contextual studies part of my course 35% of
my total mark within the first two terms. Leaving me enough
time to drink and womanise for the remaining two years!!!

If you are about to start a degree I highly recomend this
course of action.

Colleges are money making machines. I fucking hate them
(for the most part)

well . . . be glad that we're progressing as a species and
learning so much new shit that we have to teach new shit
every year.

or just say fuck it, drop out of college, because the
knowledge gained this year will be pretty much obselete next
year

ah, you're right though, getting ripped off at the end of a
schoolyear reselling my books made me absolutely livid . .
.wanted to burn the bookstore down every time.

Yeah right, you were lucky. You found a very rare weakness,
in the form of an understanding teacher, in the grand scam,
I mean grand scheme of college. I really think college is a
humongous scam, really fueled by propaganda that it is
worthwhile to attend. I'm done writing about this.

...or you could just enroll in an obscure department (film
studies, and comparative literature) like mine, where half
the classes are too specific to have a textbook...

this year my textbooks are costing me under 250$ canadian,
because all i have to buy are a few coursepacks (a bunch of
assorted photocopied readings from various journals), and a
couple of small soft cover books...

...Or you could take a fine art course, where textbooks are
irrelevant, and placing a tampon in your right nostril for
12 hours will guarantee you an Excellent mark.

Maybe try going to college for something that you are truly
interested in. - That way you may actually feel like keeping
the textbooks afterwards.

i love what i'm studying but i hate the textbooks -- bulky,
overpriced and typically ugly and hardcover. i'm very glad
to have an upperlevel courseload with few to no textbooks
and almost all primary sources.

Well, for some studies, even if you learned most everything
from the books, and going back to them is a bore for the
most part, they can still be be a good reference for later
on.

but, i'm in the same favourable boat. I have few unneeded
books to lug around.

lots of times a older edition is still fine even though
their is a newer... and if you do buy the new edition, just
sell it after...

Plenty of new editions SOLVE INCONSISTANCIES AND INCORRECT
SOLUTIONS of previous editions.

Note that most post-grad students workin on their masters
are the ones who write the solutions for books, not the
author him/herself.

Not that I don't disagree with you at all; my expenses are
large as well...I'm just saying, there are reasons.
