varying your cd collection...

this happens a lot with me, i'm not sure if it does to
anyone else.

do you find that when you listen to one type of music for
too long, you see your collection as being a bit "stale",
and feel the need for something different?

like, something REALLY different to what you normally listen
to? i find this happens a lot when i listen to too much ae,
or ambient stuff, or maybe even hectic, crazy fucked-up
stuff.

if this DOES happen to you often, what do you find yourself
listening to?

for me, the ozric tentacles definitely provide that
much-needed variation. i'd recommend "pungent effulgent", if
you can find it. :)

i try to keep my collection varied, i already try not to buy
any of this "idm" stuff anymore (at least until i have
enough other stuff to counterbalance!!) : )

i also try to get more different artists than more stuff by
the same artist... well, i try to keep a balance between
both attitudes

Ozric Tentacles? i don't know.. will check it out
what genre is it?

I was with all the way until we got to Ozric Tentacles, but
other than that detail, yes, it needs to be done. I think
you appreciate music more, as a whole, the more varied music
you listen to. You don't have to love it all, of course, but
I think any music, especially listening to music from as
many different places around the world rather than say,
different micro-genres (house, hard house, uplifiting
trance, goa trance), can only help you enjoy more what you
do really like, and if you're a musician, well, you know,
even better, umm, I've lost my thread now.

Yeah I do worry that all I have are IDM CDs sometimes.

But I look at it properly... there's some post-rock, plenty
of hip-hop, several ambient CDs, few soundtracks.

If someone was perusing my CD collection they'd find quite a
few surprises which I'm happy about... particularly
Hella - Hold Your Horse Is
Radio Espantoso (the latin jazz station from the Vice City
collection)
Lemon Jelly - Lost Horizons

by the way, i don't have any rap/hip-hop (what's the
difference? i don't even know the difference) yet...

well, except a Buck 65 album i have in mp3 (Square), but i'm
not even sure i listened to it in its entirety once even
though it does sound interesting...

do you have any recommendations?
i don't know who mentioned Infinite Livez, or...

well, i used to have problems with that, i was way too
focused on electronica. nowdays im listening to as much rock
as electronica, and sometimes add to that jazz, pop, techno
and classic...if i listen to too much of one type of music i
get fed up with it, and am then having dificulties finding
stuff that would please me. anyway, i seem to have found
just the right formula of what to listen to, so i can avoid
such situations.

Lemon Jelly is just pure cheese... I don't listen to it but
it's okay.

Rap is the spoken part of hip-hop. Plain hip-hop (often
called instrumental hip-hop) is instrumental stuff. I see
how people are turned off by what they see on TV but there's
so much good stuff it's depressing that people don't give it
a chance.

so plain rap wouldn't have any instrumental part? ' _ '

That would be acapella.

Variety is good, though I hope my CD collection never
expands to include any Barbershop quartet recordings.

I hope to some day have some swing/big band music from
around the 1920's (I think I lived a previous life back then
because I absolutely adore that shit), plenty of old soul
and jazz, and an extensive collection of early ska and
reggae.

I know a few people that are just so passionate about music
like that, early ska, reggae, old soul... (I know it's a
broad sweep but they all connect) I get envious because I'd
like to feel that way about it all, I hear some of it and I
like it but I can't go mad over it, I guess I dead inside.

that shouldn't be a problem...if you really focus on what
you'd like to get into.

I've got some Nina Simone, some Miles Davis, some Marvin
Gaye, some Gil Scott-Heron, some Bob Marly, some Jimi
Hendrix...

Also, hip-hop is the culture, which concists of the four
elements: MCing, DJing, break dancing and graffiti. Rap is
the music, mainly concisting of beats and rapping.
