i will make music for a play...

Hey.. last year of school starting for me now after allot
of problems choosing classes to take and what to do in
school more then the basics.

well, my mentor teatcher simply ended the whole debate
thingy by asking me a simple question, what do you like to
do ? and offcourse i answered Make music (expecting her to
say something like, electronic music is for your spare
time)

but she answered me with an, then you will make music, so
now i can manage to get the points i need before ending
school by doing stuff that i love, i have allready taken
studio tech classes and some basic music classes but now i
will also make music for a play/theatre thing that will be
showed for several different schools, news papers and just
common folks in the begining of next year.

This got me pretty darn exited, just for the fact that my
music will be played on the big "town theatre" infront of
allot of people..

so now i have started thinking of what to do, i usually make
drum n bass and sutch things with a wilder toutch, but now i
want to make music that suites this play, i want to make
music that goes hand in hand with the emotions of the actors
and the different scenes but with a toutch of my own
personal music, i have considered classical concept with
some modern programming and experimental noise stuff, no not
gabber noise stuff. more emotional noise mixed with beutiful
string (distorted sometimes maybe) string melodies.

im not sure about this, i would like and appreciate any
advices on how to make this as good as possible, im pretty
open minded about it, keep in mind though that it's a play
not a musical so my music will be running slow in the
background as well as having louder parts with a purpose to
help the audience feel what the actors are feeling in the
different scenes.

i need to think of a good way to sync and mix everything
aswell... ideas are welcommed.

the play is about rape victims and rapists, it will probably
be pretty intense (the last play they made where very
intense)

help/ideas are wellc

wow, this is a great opportunity for you. As a fellow final
fantasy fan, I suggest lots of "traditional" orchestra
sounds mixed with some more experimental elements. Also try
showing up for every rehersal with your laptop (if you have
one) to accurately see what each scene is about and what is
going on in general. I think the hardest part will actually
be synching the music up to whats going on the stage.

Since its about rape/victims (and not some
mushy/feelgood/happy play) I would say this allows you to
use some more 'grittier' sounds and get away with it. For
this I refer to the Funckarma song "Lolala" (should be easy
to find on soulseek), its got traditional sounds
(drums, piano, etc) combined with some experimental gritty
sounds struggling to get free in the left/right stereo
channels.

If I can think of anything else, i'll let you know.

yeahh traditional ill go for im quite sure now, i aint got
no laptop yet... but i will still show up on the "practise"
for the play and ill be talking with the other students
about the different scenes and what they think i should put
in the different parts. This doesnt mean that if they want
britneys new suicide song for the rape parts i have to agree
with it, im in charge of the music totally, i am allowed to
do whatever i want.

i spoke to my teatcher about the music and said that i will
offcourse not make too noisy stuff becouse i dont want
people to get irritated, she told me to do what i wanted,
she told me not to forget the character of my own stuff and
she said that i should use some drilly stuff =D (she has
heard my music, and likes it) very open minded lady, that's
great.

good day

Thats awesome man! Great oppurtunity indeed.. I've heard
several of your songs and their very tight in production and
I believe I remember your melodies already incorporating
some string action.. I would def. stick with the strings,
maybe even more modern with some woodwinds and or brass if
you have any you can sequence.. but def made the beat idmish
maybe more a textured freeflowing beat.. I was thinking also
when the music has to get more intense thats a great
oppurtunity to learn more about accenting the beat or melody
but how would you know when to do it? Is this going to be
rehearsed before?

offcourse it will be rehearsed, allot, got almost a year for
first making the tracks while also going to the "theatre
classes" so i will be able to make music as we go, hopefully
finish it all by end of winter then concentrate on mixing
and syncing everything a couple of months after that, then
the play will be shown for quite some time when it's
finished.

thanks for the reply! good evening

definately check out that funckarma track, because the noise
they use is gritty, but its not annoying and its almost
ambient because it fits real well with the rest of the
song.

of course, it'll all be your own style, and it would be neat
to hear some drill in a play, but i cant imagine what it
would be like because every play i've been too is kinda
cliche.

nice.

but it's almost impossible to say what kind of music would
fit the play without reading the text and knowing what kind
of style it will be produced in.

I think qrter is right there.

I guess if it is modern and gritty then the music can be as
well.

agree, i was only asking for general tips and sutch, the
manus script/text is not finished yet so i dont even know, i
guess that makes me a bit worried even though i should not
worry.

I have a feeling about it as i have seen the play they did
before, it was very nice acctually (i normally dont enjoy
school plays) but i can honestly say that they did lack
allot of music, it was "press play on a cd player" style all
over it and the only music that really related to the play
was an acoustic guittar + song that a girl played and
singed.

so im looking forward to dig into this !

I have done music with a friend for a play too, a few years
back. we had the text (which was pretty awful), but in the
end we pretty much did what we felt like at the time.

BUT the director was kind of an ass. we could've presented
him with just about any kind of music and he would react
kind of bored with a "yeah, nice..". so we decided to make
it fun primarily for ourselves.

the friend who I did that with together had done more
"soundtracks" for plays and he says that when the director
is being vague about what he wants you just do what you feel
like doing, so you have something to work from.

my advice would be to read through the play a few times
obviously, to get an idea what it's about... then discuss
with the person or persons producing the play to figure out
where the music is going to be needed, like what scenes and
stuff... once you've figured out where it is needed, just
identify the core emotions of the scenes, and make the music
accordingly...

good luck though, sounds like a great opportunity!

Because of the uncomfortable theme of the play I feel the
music should go with this theme. Talk to the sound tech and
lighting tech and see if you can do a loud/quiet thing in
conjunction with the lighting.

well, this director is my "personal teatcher" shes an
american lady who is really really nice, very open minded
but not in the way that she dont give a shit, we have talked
things trough and now ill just have to get prepared "record
sounds, make good string samples maybe and so on" untill i
get the text, after that it's time to go creative and yeah,
i will do pretty mutch what i want myself but i will listen
to the leading actors of the play aswell, i want it to end
up "listenable" but at the same time with a personal toutch
and maybe even some disturbing sounds at the right places of
the play (i want people to notice that theres something
special about the music aswell ;).

but yeah, thank god the director isnt a ass, i dont think i
would agreed from the first place if i didnt like the old
lady directing this thing.

the reading part will not be a problem at all, i dont think
i will need to read mutch at all becouse im going to stay on
the classes when the actors and directors are managing and
practesing the whole thing.

Im planning on making the music step by step showing
examples to everyone and trying out different melodies with
different scenes and so on, while doing that i will keep the
emoitions of the scenes and peoples feelings in mind all the
way too create something emotional.. theres different level
of emotional yes but i will try to keep the emotions "deep"
but still on a pretty "easy" level so that anyone can
understand and "feeeeel" with the music =)

thanks for wishing me good luck!

yes, i have been thinking of some loud/quit stuff and also
light things, the light will pretty mutch be focused on the
actors though, at least that's what the light was used to
before.

the load quite thing is a really important part imo, letting
everone breath "both actors and audience and the sound
itself" is pretty important i think, using this in a good
way can be really great for the "power/emotions" of the
music too, you know what i mean, when the music stops and
then come back at the right time it can really strike with a
great feeling.

good evening again!

also try juxtaposing the music with what's seen/heard - just
following the emotion of the scene can get boring very
quickly.

try making contrasts.

thanks, i will take think allot about that (i guess i will
think about most things hopefully)

Contrasts is an important ingrediense indeed, i personally
would hate going trugh a whole play just listening to slow
half sad melodies and rides.

Im planning contrasts that involves silence, but also big
changes from very very calm and silent music to less silent
music =)

thanks for the tips! i do take them to my mind i assure you
that
